The Development Associate for Institutional Giving is a position established to meet the needs of the expanding institutional giving operation within the Society. This position will provide support for all institutional giving fundraising activities, including institutional and family foundations, corporations, government agencies, associations and other entities. Institutional Giving at the Society is a highly entrepreneurial team run cross-departmentally out of both Advancement and the Executive Office. The Development Associate will work within the Advancement department under the Director of Grants Administration, and will also work closely with the Manager of Institutional Giving and Special Projects and Director of Strategic Partnerships in the Executive Office.
The associate will be a key part of a fast-paced office of seasoned development professionals, advancing an organization that excels in cutting-edge science journalism, STEM education and science competition experiences for middle school and high school students around the world.
Primary Responsibilities- Support the entire institutional giving cycle (identification, cultivation, solicitation, reporting and stewardship) across the organization, with an emphasis on identification and stewardship.
- Assist in research of potential new institutional giving funders based on the Society’s needs.
- Maintain an accurate calendar with all key institutional giving deadlines, especially proposal and report due dates.
- Enter data into Raiser’s Edge fundraising database including outreach, gifts, prospect information and appeal and solicitation coding.
- Assist with reporting and stewardship, including sponsor benefits fulfillment.
- Track institutional gift payments, agreements and other documentation in Raiser’s Edge.
- Draft funder reports, maintain submission review schedule and prepare entry of final submissions via online portals or email messages.
- Maintain review schedule for internal grant management progress tracking.
- Support grant renewal process by monitoring renewal timing and preparing draft applications.
- Prepare materials for internal and external meetings and communications.

- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Excellent attention to detail and highly organized.
- High level of professionalism and time management capacities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and project management software.
- Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge database or comparable donor management
- Familiarity with prospect research tools (Foundation Directory, Guidestar, Research Point or similar systems).
- Demonstrated ability to work with others as a team, to multi-task and to be a self-starter.
- Understanding of and affinity for the core values of the Society.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office Our office is located near the Dupont Circle and Farragut North Metro stations. This position usually works in an office setting but will temporarily work from home until at least January 4, 2021 with possible extensions.
- The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment.
- This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during normal office hours of the Society. Up to 10 percent travel to the Society’s science research competitions and other events is necessary in this position. There will be no work-related travel through at least January 4, 2021.
- 2-4 years’ experience in development/fundraising or similar
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
