An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) is recognized as one of the nation’s premier cultural museums. JANM is based in historic Little Tokyo neighborhood, adjacent to the Metro Gold Line in the Little Tokyo/Arts district in downtown Los Angeles, a neighborhood that has experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse new restaurants, shops, luxury apartments, and nightlife.
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) has a strong commitment to the mission of JANM. The CFO is responsible for all financial and accounting matters for JANM, including supervising employees performing financial tracking, reporting, accounting, billing, collections, and budgeting duties. The CFO develops internal control polices, and procedures for activities such as budget administration, cash management, and accounting. The CFO also prepares or directs the preparation of financial statements, business activity reports, financial position forecasts, annual budgets, and other reports required by the President and CEO and external regulatory agencies. A member of the Executive Team, the CFO reports to the President and CEO and partners with the Executive Leadership Team and the Finance Committee of JANM’s Board of Trustees to direct business development strategies and to ensure that sound fiscal policies and proper infrastructure and systems are in place.
Lead and manage the financial function of the organization, provide sound decision-making in support of JANM’s strategies and mission, and ensures that financial systems, analysis and reporting effectively support the organization’s financial information needs. Is able to engage others, modeling cooperation, collaboration, integrity, courtesy, and humility. Communicate a clear point of view with open-mindedness and flexibility, where appropriate. Embrace diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility principles. Able to focus on results while working with attention to detail and with a sense of urgency. Lead by example and promote JANM’s strategic objectives.
Bachelor’s in Finance or Accounting, CPA certification or equivalent qualification is desirable. 10 or more years of financial management experience at a nonprofit organization with financial analysis of fundraising campaigns desirable. Demonstrated success managing finance, accounting, budgeting, control and reporting functions. Extensive experience with accounting software. Strong analytical skills and experience translating a strategic plan into a financial model. Ability to effectively provide information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates, as well as Board members and affiliated organizations. EOE.
