The consultant will produce (with our input) the Case for Support. This should be accompanied by an initial implementation plan, alongside a realistic timeline with proposed milestones.

Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam

OUCRU has been conducting medical research in Vietnam and other countries in Southeast Asia for 30 years (www.oucru.org). Our vision is to have local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally driven research programme on infectious diseases in Southeast Asia.

OUCRU is part of the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and its research is funded predominantly by the Wellcome Trust, UK. We are embedded within the government healthcare system of Vietnam. We have around 250 staff working in offices and laboratories within the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Ho Chi Minh city, and around 50 staff working within the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi. We conduct research that aims to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases.

The Centre for Critical Care Research and Training

We want to build and develop a new Centre for Critical Care Research and Training within the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh city (http://www.oucru.org/a-new-model-for-intensive-care/).

The Centre is part of OUCRU’s 10-year strategy to 2030, using new technology to develop a new and affordable model for improving the clinical care of patients with life-threatening infectious diseases. It will contain a 24-bed intensive care unit and a similar sized high dependency unit, out-patient facilities for patient follow-up and clinical trials, and facilities for post-graduate training.

Outline brief

We are seeking a fundraising consultant to develop our fundraising strategy for the new centre. We expect that the building and initial development of the centre will cost around 10M USD.

We anticipate attracting philanthropic funds from a variety of sources, from conventional grant giving organisations to high net worth individuals and from within Asia and globally. The consultant will provide expert guidance on how to identify, approach, and initiate fruitful and long term relationships with these funding sources.

The consultant will produce (with our input) the Case for Support. This should be accompanied by an initial implementation plan, alongside a realistic timeline with proposed milestones.

Expected activities include:

  • Analysis of potential donors, fundraising streams, and potential income trajectory
  • Development of strategic options for funding
  • Meetings (on-line or in person) to discuss early drafts of the strategy
  • Report & presentation of the strategy and its implementation plan
  • Liaise with colleagues in OUCRU, the University of Oxford Development Office, and the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health in Oxford

We anticipate the work will be conducted under a consultancy contract with the University of Oxford of up to 2 months duration in the first instance. The terms will be negotiable dependent upon the experience of the individual. There may be opportunity to extend the consultancy depending on the requirements of the strategy and the skills of the individual.

Residency within Vietnam may be an advantage, but is not mandatory as we anticipate the majority of the work would be conducted remotely. The individual will work closely with OUCRU’s Director, Professor Guy Thwaites, and a small Fundraising Advisory Committee that consists of senior OUCRU scientists and administrators, the Director of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, and two external advisors.

Our objective is to have a full developed funding strategy for implementation in Q1 of 2021.

Candidate requirements

  • Extensive experience in developing successful fundraising strategies/donor engagement plans for charities and the non-profit sector.
  • Specific experience identifying, initiating and supporting strategic funding partnerships for the health and/or non-profit sector. Experience of fundraising in Asia is desirable.
  • A proven track record of fundraising within the healthcare and/or academic sector. Advanced knowledge of institutional, private, and bi-and multi-lateral donors who work with these sectors is desirable.
  • Experience of fundraising for capital projects.
  • Understanding and experience in interpreting project/account plans, budgets, and other financial information.
  • Accustomed to working to deadlines
  • Accustomed to working for projects with specific financial goals
  • Able to work independently and efficiently at home, while working with remote teams and individuals in different time zones.
  • Have a laptop with all MS Office programmes and fast Wifi
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Further enquiries may be addressed to Professor Guy Thwaites (gthwaites@oucru.org). Candidates will be asked to submit a CV, cover letter, and a sample from a fundraising strategy they have recently developed via hr@oucru.org. References should be provided upon request.
