The Office of Development manages the Trustees, institutional partnerships, leadership giving, the International Advisory Council, the Brookings Council, the Brookings Society, and overall fundraising strategies for the Executive Office and Institution at large.

Reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Managing Director of Development is charged with leading and managing the strategy, activity, and staff of the Brookings Central fundraising team and the donor engagement and special events team. As a member of the Central Development leadership team, the Managing Director will play an integral role in setting the strategic direction for the program's long-term, sustainable growth. The Managing Director will build and oversee an integrated and highly-coordinated approach to individual gift strategy that not only increases resources across Brookings, but also increases the overall donor base and widens the visibility and relevance of Brookings to begin to build a pipeline of future donors, volunteers, advocates, and trustees. The Managing Director will oversee a staff of five and will have shared responsibility with the Vice President for Development for communicating activities and strategies between Central Development, programmatic development staff, and other key institutional stakeholders. The Managing Director will have a personal fundraising portfolio of major gift donors and prospects and will interact with members of the various constituent groups, such as the Brookings Board of Trustees, Council, Society, and Associates.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree required, and a minimum of 10 years of successful fundraising experience in a complex and dynamic institution, preferably in a university, research institution, or similar organization, that includes a proven history of successful solicitation of five-, six- and seven-figure gifts. This experience will include at least four years of leadership and management experience, developing and overseeing professional staff, as well as directing day-to-day activities and operations. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

The Managing Director will be a sophisticated, proactive, and diplomatic individual, possessing high emotional intelligence, professional maturity, credibility, patience, good judgment, honesty, and integrity. Must have a commitment to teamwork, accountability, and collaborative decision-making; an affinity for the mission of Brookings with the ability to serve as a compelling ambassador for the Institution; a comprehensive understanding of institutional development, including campaigns, annual giving, major gifts fundraising, planned giving, and corporate and foundation fundraising; a keen understanding of the strategic planning and execution of donor engagement and special events that are coordinated with development staff and activities, while also being highly complementary to an overall fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship strategy. Experience successfully leading and managing a diverse team. Must have the ability to conceptualize, plan, and implement a strategic approach to building relationships and securing philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, and foundations, including setting realistic and measurable goals, developing strategies for prospects, prioritizing activities, soliciting gifts, and orchestrating the involvement of volunteers and institutional leadership. Demonstrated strong and persuasive writing and communication skills: articulate, persuasive, polished, and sophisticated with ability to successfully interact with high-level individuals in diverse settings. Strong analytical, organizational and planning skills. A forward-thinking, thoughtful outlook who can design and build successful, well-designed fundraising and donor relations strategies for Brookings and its programs. Excellent project management, analytical, and organizational skills including influencing, leading, negotiating, and delegating abilities. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and maintain disciplined adherence to program goals.
