As Penn State continues a record-setting campaign, A Greater Penn State for 21st Century Excellence, a top frontline fundraiser is needed in the role of Director of Major Gifts in the Department of Medicine to engage alumni and friends as partners in supporting Penn State Health. Reporting to the Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations and works closely with Penn State Health's leadership, as well as other partners and central development offices, this Director of Major Gifts will:
  • Develop strategies for individual prospective donors, including coordinating volunteer and physician interaction with prospects
  • Articulate Penn State's needs, ambitions, and values, including diversity, equity, and inclusion, through excellent informal and formal communications, including written proposals
  • Develop an understanding of the educational, research, clinical, and financial needs and goals of Penn State Health and the Department of Medicine
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit individual prospects in consultation with internal partners and development staff
  • Direct and prepare major gift proposals, as well as cultivation and solicitation materials
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct visits and special events for prospects and donors
  • Prepare briefing documents for senior administrators and volunteers
  • Oversee stewardship activity with assigned prospects
  • Report regularly on all fundraising activity through active implementation of the major gifts tracking/reporting/moves management system

    This position requires a bachelor's degree or higher plus five years of work-related experience. The successful candidate will also have:
  • Fundraising experience with emphasis on major gifts from individuals and organizations within an academic medical center or a large scientific/health care research institution
  • A dedication to and understanding of the skills required to build relationships with diverse communities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and medical fundraising
  • Proven track record of successful major gift ($100,000+) solicitations
  • Knowledge or experience in planning giving is desired
  • Ability to function independently yet work in a centralized development structure
  • Ability to travel both locally and nationally
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills and a genuine appreciation in working with diverse audiences

    Operation of a motor vehicle as part of the position's duties and a valid driver's license are required. Successful completion of a motor vehicle records check, in addition to standard background checks, is also required.
