Position Summary

The Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations works to assist UB faculty and administrators in building mutually beneficial relationships between the university and corporate and foundation contributors. Under the general direction of the Senior Associate Vice President for Advancement, the Director/Senior Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations (“Director/Senior Director”) is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major corporate and foundation prospects in support of priority programs and research efforts. The Director/Senior Director’s efforts will focus on an assigned portfolio of schools/units (specifically medical school and/or health sciences focus), designated university initiatives, and cross-disciplinary projects as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and assignments include, but are not limited to:

  • In collaboration with university partners (faculty, administrators, university leadership), develop strategic, coordinated, long-term, multi-faceted relationships with major corporate and foundation prospects (both local and national/international) on behalf of the university;
  • Devise and implement strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of corporate and foundation gifts of $100,000+, including researching funding sources and preparing and submitting letters of intent, full grant proposals, budgets and post-award reports;
  • Work proactively with UB faculty, staff, administration and advancement colleagues on the identification of fundable programmatic and research initiatives, and to advance priority programs;
  • Partner closely with the Office of Prospect Research in the identification of new corporate and foundation prospects, particularly those that broaden the university’s reach beyond the Western New York region;
  • In partnership with colleagues in the Office of Donor Relations and Stewardship, implement a comprehensive stewardship program for donors involving faculty, university leadership, corporate and foundation relations staff, donor relations and stewardship colleagues, and other partners in and outside of the division;
  • Help to foster a greater awareness of the importance of private support amongst campus constituencies through active partnering and engagement of faculty, staff and deans;
  • Develop and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with colleagues across the university, including student life, alumni engagement, sponsored projects services, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development and SUNY Research Foundation for the purposes of establishing university strategies and solicitation of corporate and foundation partners;
  • Track national trends impacting support from corporations and foundations to higher education, the university, and individual programs;
  • Document all contacts and gifts through the practices outlined in the division’s prospect tracking and management protocol, and adhere to the policies and procedures for soliciting, accepting, recording, reporting and acknowledging gifts;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 Required:

  • A bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of 3 years (Director) or a minimum of 5 years (Senior Director) fundraising experience ideally with a focus on corporate and/or foundation solicitations, preferably at a doctoral/research intensive university or similarly complex educational setting;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities;
  • Mature outlook in dealing with complex processes and fluctuating day-to-day operations;
  • Experience with strategizing and soliciting major corporate and foundation gifts;
  • Experience with many aspects of corporate and foundation advancement, including, but not limited to: prospect research, tracking and management, and proposal development;
  • Strong, flexible interpersonal skills and experience in working with academic and programmatic partners with diverse personalities and work styles;
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with confidence and effectiveness across a vast array of personae and levels of influence;
  • Ability to learn quickly and retain guidance and training;
  • Must be able to travel up to 20% of the time, including evenings and occasional weekends.
  • Capability to analyze challenges and opportunities, think strategically and to consider multiple solutions/approaches both internally and externally;
  • Sensitivity to long-term relationship building and stewardship;
  • Commitment to donor-centered philanthropy as a complement to university goals.

 

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree;
  • Experience working in a medical school, hospital and/or health sciences setting.
  • Knowledge of prospect research tools.
