Harlem Children’s Zone is currently seeking an experienced professional to lead the Research and Evaluation Department. The Managing Director of Research and Evaluation is responsible for developing, building, and maintaining evaluation systems and infrastructure so that it supports efficient data gathering, analysis, and information dissemination within the organization and with our external partners.  Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Managing Director of Research and Evaluation is a key member of the senior management team and works closely with other key senior staff in establishing research priorities and determining the resources (internal and/or external) required to engage in the desired work.  Critically, the Managing Director of Research and Evaluation ensures that the organization uses its data to maximize program delivery and understands its impact.  

 

This role is an exciting opportunity for someone with a deep background in research and evaluation, management, and strong qualitative and quantitative analytic skills, to contribute to the continued growth, learning, and success of a frontline organization with comprehensive services.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Management

  • Prioritize and distribute projects and responsibilities
  • Continually promote and help create a learning environment to develop team and ultimately provide increasingly effective services
  • Plan and administer department budget

Program Evaluation

  • Oversee data collection, entry, and quality
  • Analyze and synthesize quantitative and qualitative data and create systems for using data to provide ongoing feedback and support to program leadership for the improvement of program practices
  • Conduct program observations, interviews, surveys, and focus groups
  • Implement and manage internal systems for conducting ongoing outcomes measurement and assessment
  • Design and develop evaluation plans, choosing the most effective methodologies, instruments, and resources, and summarize and present findings
  • Manage collaborative research efforts with research partners

Salesforce data system (ZORA)

  • Oversee system structure, capacities, and architecture, and train staff using the system
  • Work closely with the Information Technology Department to plan database expansions and modifications
  • Manage consultant engagements

Strategy

  • Keep abreast of emerging research that best supports existing work or development of new projects
  • Support writing grant proposals, reports, and other documents
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to funders, other non-profit organizations, policymakers, academic audiences, community members, and staff

 

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • D. in Psychology, Education, Social Policy, or related subject
  • 10+ years of management and leadership in non-profit research
  • 5+ years of experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods, tool design, and validation
  • Deep content knowledge in the areas of program design, early childhood development, K-12 education, college access and success, community development, and health interventions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment 
  • Outstanding analytical ability and advanced statistical knowledge
  • Ability to produce high-quality deliverables on time and within budget
  • Willingness to respect and learn from colleagues with varying backgrounds and skillsets; ability to work effectively with colleagues across the organization with varying degrees of experience 
  • Experience with community building, youth development, or related work preferred 
  • Prior experience with youth and adults of diverse cultural backgrounds 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to ability to engage and inspire others to achieve shared goals
