Fair Trade USA is seeking a strategic, creative and experienced Director of Institutional Giving and Philanthropy to join and lead its Development team and help ensure the philanthropic success of its mission, vision and programs. This is an opportunity to work with one of the best-known brands in the nonprofit and social entrepreneurship space with the support of an energetic and visionary Founder & CEO.


The primary focus and responsibility of the Director of Institutional Giving and Philanthropy is to generate contributed revenue for programs and initiatives by cultivating and growing relationships and securing funding from corporate and private foundations. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in corporate and foundation fundraising in a social enterprise or other nonprofit that focuses on sustainable development.


The Director of Institutional Giving and Philanthropy will work in close collaboration with our leadership and departmental teams (including the office of the CEO, President & COO, Board of Directors, Programs, Product Categories, Impact Research & Learning, and Finance) to generate fundraising opportunities and will have direct revenue responsibility.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Fundraising, revenue, and grants management duties (80%)

  • Manage an active portfolio of 15+ strategic and well-aligned funders, and broaden that portfolio to 50+ funders
  • Identify and develop strategic funding opportunities with current and potential future partners—with a strong focus on building a robust pipeline to meet annual contributed revenue goals
  • Establish departmental goals and strategies for fundraising, donor development, institutional outreach and partnerships (Currently between $3M - $4M annually)
  • Develop strategies for engaging new partners and broadening the organization’s network of prospective corporate or foundation funders
  • Collaborate across the organization to translate programmatic initiatives into fundraising opportunities and write LOIs, concept notes, and proposals for programs and initiatives that advance FTUSA’s mission
  • Work with Program teams to oversee management of grant funded projects, track implementation progress and funds utilization and report progress toward achievement of project milestones and results to funders
  • Represent FTUSA at meetings and conferences to remain appraised of global development trends and issues and explore new opportunities for engagement
  • Provide support in stewarding FTUSA’s major donor program
  • Occasional travel to domestic and international destinations, including site visits and meetings with major partners (temporarily on pause due to COVID-19)

People management and team leadership duties (20%)

  • Develop and track progress against the department’s annual strategic plan, revenue forecasts, and success metrics
  • Liaise with Leadership Team and coordinate necessary internal and external resources to ensure contributed revenue programs are effectively executed and partners’ needs are fully met
  • Oversight of department budget, approval of major expenses and reimbursements, and quarterly reconciliation with Finance
  • Lead, mentor and help train Development staff

 

Qualifications
Required Skills, Experience, & Knowledge

  • Minimum of 8 years of increasing responsibility in development, with success in generating and building long-term funding relationships
  • Demonstrated record of success with building and managing a portfolio of strategic corporate and foundation funders and soliciting and closing grants of $1,000,000 or more
  • Proven expertise in fundraising with corporate and private foundations
  • Outstanding grant-writing skills
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Clear ability and business acumen to understand and articulate complex programmatic material in a detailed manner to audiences with different levels of background in these areas
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills and entrepreneurial thinking
  • Ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders, and direct experience engaging with program officers, senior-level decision makers and influencers in foundations / philanthropic community
  • Significant business development and relationship building skills, and proven ability to meet revenue targets
  • A passion for Fair Trade USA’s mission, vision and accomplishments
  • Bay Area-based or Remote with ability to visit Oakland headquarters periodically (post-COVID). Willingness to travel occasionally both domestically and internationally in support of institutional relationships (post-COVID)
  • Must be able to submit samples of successful grant proposals upon request

Additional Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience fundraising for a nonprofit social enterprise or a nonprofit that has a strong earned revenue model
  • Prior experience in international development, corporate social responsibility, sustainable agriculture and/or social entrepreneurship
  • Familiarity with other fundraising channels including major gifts, in kind donations and online giving

Education & Training

  • Master’s degree

Technology & Software

  • Skilled user of grants management/Salesforce CRM software
  • Strong proficiency in Word, Excel and Powerpoint/presentation software

 

Location

This position can work out of the Bay Area (Oakland) or Remote U.S.
