HCZ is currently seeking an experienced professional to manage the donor communications needs of the Development department. The Assistant Director of Donor Communications is responsible for managing and writing the day-to-day needs of the Development team as related to donor communications. Reporting to the Director of Major Gifts, the Assistant Director is a key member of the Development team, will work in partnership with the Communications team, and collaborate with Executive leadership, program staff, finance, and research and evaluation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Write, maintain, and regularly update development materials, including HCZ overview narratives and presentations, program overviews, appeals, acknowledgement letters, donor facing web content, Board minutes, and CEO and Executive updates
  • Write donor-facing communications from the CEO and Executive leads, as well as talking points for events
  • Interview clients and donors for compelling storytelling in donor communications and at events
  • Create and manage the production and distribution of digital communications, including newsletters, interest emails, and online features for donor web pages
  • Create and manage the production and distribution of print communications, including annual reports, appeals, case statements, strategic plans, stewardship updates, and event collateral
  • Articulate HCZ’s fundraising priorities and stewardship goals to creative partners, including external design consultants, to ensure donor materials reflect HCZ’s overall strategy and identity
  • Serve as Development’s liaison to the Communications Team
  • Create, maintain, and curate a database of content, graphics, and photographs for use in donor communications
  • Manage content calendars for donor communications, appeals, and stewardship
  • Design templates and simple graphics for smaller needs (i.e. one pagers, email announcements, presentations, website graphics)
  • Provide writing and editing support for development related materials, including proposals and reports for major donors and institutional funders

Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or marketing (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • 5 to 7 years of communications or marketing experience with at least 2 years in the nonprofit field
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to write for digital and print
  • Exceptional grammar and editing skills
  • Experience with digital and email marketing and SEO (strong digital literacy a plus)
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Must be highly organized and have ability to pay close attention to detail
  • Highly collaborative with excellent interpersonal skills and a sense of humor
  • Solid knowledge of website analytics tools (e.g. Google Analytics, Webtrends, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS a plus
  • Raiser’s Edge or other relevant CRM database experience
  • Graphic design skills a plus
