Job Description and Expectations

Purpose: To advise, govern, oversee policy, fund raising and general promotion of Haitian Global Health Alliance. Inc. to support GHESKIO in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Mission: The Haitian Global Health Alliance’s purpose is to support GHESKIO. GHESKIO’s three-part mission includes clinical service, clinical and operational research, and medical training in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other infectious or chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease.

Programs at GHESKIO include maternal child health, adolescent health and reproductive health, perinatal mothers clubs, vocational training, and psychosocial support. Primary care is provided along with HIV prevention, treatment and care.  To learn more, go to 

Major responsibilities:  An individual board member must each fulfill certain obligations to the organization. Those obligations include:

  • Attend at least 75% of all board meetings and organizational functions.
  • Be prepared to participate by reviewing the agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings.
  • Participate in board and committee matters; review and comment on minutes and reports.
  • Be informed about and promote HGHA’s and GHESKIO’s missions.
  • Keep up-to-date on developments in the fields of fundraising and/or global health.
  • Offer to take on special assignments.
  • Make a personal financial contribution to the organization, as well as identify external contacts that can potentially provide financial resources, both cash and in-kind. The minimum Give/Get is $25,000.00 annually. This can be in any proportion – i.e. Get 80% and Give 20%
  • Participate in organizational fund development.
  • Act as an ambassador for HGHA in support of GHESKO.
  • Get to know other board members; build working relationships that contribute to consensus.
  • Suggest nominees to the board who can make significant contributions to the work of the board and to GHESKIO.
  • Follow conflict of interest and confidentiality policies.
  • Assist the board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities such as reviewing the organization's annual financial statements and 990 IRS tax filing.

Length of term: Three years

Meetings and time commitment:  The Board of Directors meets quarterly. Meetings typically last one hour. We attempt to have one board meeting in person annually. Other meetings take place electronically.

  • Committees of the board meet at least two times per year depending upon role and responsibilities.
  • Board members are occasionally asked to attend special events or meetings during the year.
  • All new Board members must attend a short orientation and training.
