Managing Director of Development (Principal Gifts)    

The University of Mississippi’s Office of Development seeks an ambitious, experienced fundraiser for Managing Director of Development for Principal Gifts. This professional will expand the principal gifts program, serve on the Vice Chancellor’s leadership team, supervise staff and solicit $1M+ gifts.

The successful candidate will direct a principal gifts team of collaborative representatives from the Office of Development, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Ole Miss Alumni Association and Ole Miss Athletics. This professional will help develop “big idea” projects involving multiple campus units with the potential to secure transformative gifts of $10 million-plus. At least 50 percent of the job will be working with principal gift donors, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding $1M+ gifts. It is expected that the successful candidate will have closed at least a seven-figure gift and have extensive experience successfully closing six-figure gifts. Higher Education experience as well as supervisory experience preferred.

Definition of Class: 

This position identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards major and principal gift prospects across the university. The incumbent is a leader in the division in fundraising results responsible for supervising multiple college and unit development staff; maintains knowledge of university-wide plans and opportunities; serves as a member of the vice chancellor for development’s leadership team; collaborates with the chancellor, vice chancellor, development staff, deans and directors to engage donors and encourage transformational gifts, and remains knowledgeable of  and articulates about current gift planning vehicles. Extensive travel is required to cultivate and solicit donors.

 

Examples of Work Performed:
  • Develops fundraising strategies for assigned major and principal gift prospects.
  • Evaluates progress toward goals and adjusts as necessary.
  • Supervises multiple units of development staff.
  • Collaborates with university leadership and development staff.
  • Takes college or university leaders on donor visits.
  • Serves on the vice chancellor’s leadership team.
  • Coordinates special events for principal gift prospects.
  • Works with communications to develop fundraising pieces.
  • Arranges visits with donors via phone, email and social media.
  • Attends alumni, donor, college, sporting and other events.
  • Promptly records interactions with donors in the development database.
  • Sends all biographical updates to the development database.
  • Runs reports to build a trip or share information with a supervisor.
  • Travels overnight and on weekends to meet with prospective donors.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required.
Essential Functions:

  1. Cultivates and solicits gifts from assigned major and principal gift donors.
  2. Works with university leadership, development leadership and development staff to develop and secure major and principal gifts.
  3. Supervises multiple units of development staff.
  4. Travels extensively and attends various university functions.

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

 AND

Experience:
Seven (7) years of experience related to the above described duties.
