MAJOR PURPOSE: The Development Associate for Hartford Seminary will join a team to launch an ambitious fundraising program. The Associate will join the development team and the President to strengthen a fundraising program that reflects the Seminary’s culture, mission, goals, and new strategic plan. In these efforts, the Associate will work collaboratively and transparently with development colleagues, consultants, board members, senior leadership, faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The Associate will help to launch new systems and structures for planning and decision-making around development, and build pipelines of major gift prospects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The successful candidate will be an organized and detail-oriented professional, passionate about the fundraising potential of Hartford Seminary and able to support senior leadership to maximize results. The Associate will have some experience in fundraising or a closely related field of expertise, possess outstanding interpersonal competencies, be able to effectively engage volunteer leadership, and demonstrate a deep commitment to Hartford Seminary’s vision.

Fundraising:

  • Help plan systematic, appropriate, and effective solicitation strategies for major and planned gift prospects, including collaborating with key partners
  • Work collaboratively with development team to support Hartford Seminary’s overall fundraising strategy
  • Utilize research tools to identify current and prospective funders, conducting analyses of donor detail to determine solicitation approach for President, Board, and Staff
  • Provide support for fundraising committees and related events and activities led by board members, volunteers, and others
  • Work closely with communications team to create and deploy fundraising materials
  • Coordinate event planning, production, and follow-up
  • Help execute fundraising calendar with development team

 Administration:

  • Prepare, process, and make deposits of all donations and distribute weekly donation reports
  • Enter donations into the donor database, ensuring accurate capture of donor information and gift designations
  • Maintain tracking charts for cultivation opportunities
  • Assist in executing development mailings, including tax acknowledgements; process returned development mail and update donor information and details
  • Maintain physical and digital institutional files
  • Generate lists and reports as needed
  • Type notes and enter into database for fellow staff as needed

Other minimum qualifications:

  • One to three years of fundraising experience (or equivalent experience)
  • Exceptionally strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational and analytical skills, and project management skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Proficiency in budgeting
  • Orientation as a team player with strong time management skills
  • Superior research skills and experience using specialized research tools
  • Proficiency in database technologies and Microsoft Office
  • Experience in program event set-ups (secure catering services, room set-up, special equipment, etc.)
  • Ability to manage up to leadership to move a fundraising program forward
  • Ability to engage volunteers, maintaining a high level of diplomacy and confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • An advocate for diversity and inclusion
  • Energetic and confident
  • Flexibility and a sense of humor
  • A bachelor's degree
  • Experience in higher education preferable
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with religious communities a plus

As is expected of all employees, provide backup support for Seminary’s major events/general activities, as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Driving ability for transporting donors, trustees, etc.  Lifting up to 30 lbs., reaching, and stretching for shopping and event/meal set-up.  Dexterity for computer use and ability to verbally interact in person and by phone.
