Rosewood Family Advisors (RFA) is a multi-family office whose mission is to provide exceptional client service and advice. Our professionals help ultra-high net worth clients define and meet their goals by providing a diverse range of family office services including tax compliance, bill pay and expense management, philanthropic advising, and estate planning.

The Opportunity

The Associate Director of Philanthropy (ADP) is responsible for facilitating satisfying giving experiences by designing effective philanthropic strategies for each client’s situation and interests.  The ADP assists clients in the evaluation and negotiation of projects and oversees the agreement process.  RFA is looking for someone who can be both strategic and hands-on to partner with RFA team members and clients (including their teams and advisors), to build an effective and best in practice model for grant making and impact investing with philanthropic capital.  Client philanthropic interests will be diverse and may include, but not limited to, environmental, education, public health issues and international matters.  This is a full-time position.  Due to COVID-19, the position will initially be remote.  The ADP may work remotely or in our Palo Alto office post-COVID-19.  

Responsibilities

  • Develop rapport and instill confidence with clients and their team(s) to develop credibility and earn their trust as a resource for philanthropy
  • Interface with clients and their team(s) on their philanthropic needs and coordinate resources to implement projects
  • Help clients establish and consult on the administration of their charitable entities including donor advised funds (DAFs), private foundations and LLCs
  • Manage compliance issues related to grantmaking including advising on the optimal vehicle for routing a grant, overseeing the creation and negotiation of agreements for grants and consulting projects, resolving issues with client teams and grantees, and training staff and client teams on legal issues related to philanthropic capital
  • Facilitate custom impact investments with client teams, investors, investees and counsel to drive timely closing of deals
  • Collaborate with outside advisors and counsels at DAFs, charities, universities and impact investment companies and funds
  • Improve grant policies and procedures with an emphasis on building and scaling infrastructure through efficiently operated systems and processes
  • Identify and research charitable organizations that best fit the client’s interest and priorities

Skills

  • Required: Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • Required: 8+ years of legal experience (preferably in tax-exempt, corporate or trusts and estates law) practicing at a law firm or in-house at a sponsoring charity of DAFs, community or private foundation, philanthropy and wealth advisory firm or family office
  • Demonstrated experience working with ultra-high net worth clients
  • Knowledge of IRS grants compliance rules and regulations specific to multiple types of charitable structures including DAFs, public charities, private foundations and 501(c)(4)s
  • Knowledge of IRS grants compliance rules and regulations specific to multiple types of charitable structures including DAFs, public charities, private foundations and 501(c)(4)s
  • Experience with LLCs, non-traditional philanthropic funding model, PRIs, MRIs, international grant making, etc.
  • Experience with or interest in impact investing using philanthropic capital from DAFs and private foundations
  • Ability to undertake new responsibilities beyond the job description
  • Initiative and creativity to expand RFA’s philanthropic advising services by delivering new offerings and ideas to clients.
  • Humility to undertake tasks as necessary to accomplish a project
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • This is a full-time position. Due to COVID-19, the position will initially be remote.  Post COVID-19, the position may be permanently remote or in our Palo Alto office.
