The Faith & Politics Institute (FPI) seeks a Director of Programs to manage all planning and execution in thematic program areas: leadership; bipartisanship and civility; and civil rights. As a key member of the FPI leadership team, the Director of Programs will report to the President and CEO, with work collaboration with the COO, and fulfill the organization’s overall programming mission. The Director of Programs will advance our mission by leading the effort to best position the organization in the political environment, working with FPI team, Board, and other stakeholders to create meaningful programming that will assist politically diverse members of Congress and other diverse political and elected leaders in their public service. 

OVERVIEW

This exempt level position requires a creative self-starter, natural leader and strong team player who can excel in strategic planning and operational execution. S/he will direct and manage all areas of programming, such as planning and development, grant writing and reporting in concert with development staff, logistics, briefing books and event coordination for FPI leadership, to ensure high quality programs and activities. S/he will work with the Director of Communications in developing collateral material for the organization.  The successful candidate will be skilled at developing interesting and relevant programs that will appeal to a diverse range of political viewpoints and will extend the mission and reach of the Institute. The candidate should possess a deep commitment to the Institute’s nonpartisan mission to bridge divides and will consistently seek to advance the Institute’s goals both in day-to-day work and in long-range planning.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Calendar

  • Working with the President & CEO, design, implement, and execute programs that appeal to individuals from diverse viewpoints;
  • Create and manage a multi-year rolling program plan of compelling and relevant new programming, focused primarily on members of Congress and their senior staff, and national political leaders from diverse viewpoints;
  • Lead the creation of evaluation systems and metrics to continue to improve the organization’s capacity to learn from its work and share that learning with stakeholders;
  • Work with the Director of Protocol on execution of events and stakeholder relations;
  • Create and implement programmatic strategies, budgets, and operational plans within scope, in coordination with the Chief Operating Officer;
  • Plan and execute the substantive elements of programs, coordinate with the Operations team on relevant logistics, and coordinate the various programs of the Institute so that they are manageable with available staff and resources;
  • Working with in-house staff and any event consultants, plan and implement Pilgrimage and event logistics;
  • Responsible for advance trip planning and execution; and
  • Responsible for program logistics for Pilgrimages and events including all run of show documents.

Development

  • Present and incorporate grant-making strategies, review, approve and report on grants, ensuring that they are aligned with strategy; and
  • Assist in the development of annual reports for the Institute within programming. 

External Partnerships

  • Conduct outreach to, and maintain relationships with, potential partner organizations to develop targeted and engaging programming;
  • Working with the Director of Protocol, identify potential honorary cohosts for events; and
  • In tandem with fellow FPI senior staff, cultivate strategic partnerships and initiatives to further FPI’s mission and programmatic goals.

Communications

  • Working in concert with the Director of Communications, implement FPI’s strategic programmatic initiatives; and
  • Support communications efforts by writing, editing, assigning, and contributing to promotional pieces, blogs, social media, and policy papers.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS

Incumbents will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or a minimum of 7-10 years of specialized professional experience;
  • Working the President & CEO conceptualize, develop and implement programming for members of Congress;
  • Knowledge of conference planning and execution;
  • Knowledge of all Microsoft programs;
  • Knowledge of Salesforce a plus;
  • Grant-writing skills a plus;
  • Exceptional at resolving any problems efficiently and in a timely manner;
  • High level of integrity and ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality; 
  • Ability to manage numerous projects at one time, be detail-oriented, and follow-through with a high level of accuracy;
  • Positive, proactive, and team focused attitude;  
  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and stakeholders;
  • Accepts and acts on performance-based criticism and direction;
  • Works well under pressure and handles stress with grace;
  • Ability to travel for all programs and advance travel (approx. 10%);
  • Works a flexible schedule that may include long hours, nights, and weekends on occasion; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
