ABOUT THE ORGANIZATIONS:

The Door and its charter high school Broome Street Academy (BSA) are two interconnected organizations. Together with a combined budget of almost $40 million, the two organizations assist more than 11,000 vulnerable New York young people every year to embrace their strengths, realize their potential and achieve a life of well-being and prosperity.

The Door

Founded in 1972, The Door is New York City’s leading youth development organization, assisting over 11,000 at-risk youth ages 12-24 every year in two locations, Manhattan and the Bronx. With an annual operating budget of approximately $32 million and 300 full-time and part-time staff, some unionized, The Door provides a safe, caring environment with a wide range of services including health, mental health, and legal services and assistance, career and education programs, runaway and homeless supports, job training and placement, supportive housing, sports and recreational activities, arts, and nutritious meals -- all for free and completely confidentially.

 Broome Street Academy (BSA)

BSA is a NYC public charter high school authorized by SUNY and established by The Door with approximately 320 students, a staff of 50 teachers and supportive personnel, and an annual operating budget of over $7 million. BSA’s students are members of The Door and uniquely utilize the full scope of The Door programming and services. Fifty percent of the seats at BSA are held for students who are homeless or in foster care, and virtually all students are at-risk.
