The Chronicle of Philanthropy is seeking a senior reporter/writer to join a new partnership The Chronicle forged with the Associated Press to develop journalism that helps readers understand the most under-covered and important parts of society:  the $6 trillion nonprofit world.

Organizations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Salvation Army, the Movement for Black Lives,  the World Wildlife Fund, and so many others together employ 1 out of every 11 Americans and advance solutions to problems often overlooked by government and business.

The mission of our expanded reporting team is to produce reporting that helps Americans learn more about how their giving and volunteering affects their communities and how philanthropists, foundations, corporate giving efforts, and nonprofits bring about change on issues like climate change, racial justice, health care, poverty, and education. The senior reporter/writer will also work across the Chronicle’s newsroom on projects and articles that will gain attention from policy makers, high-level donors, nonprofit board members, and the general public.

Through this addition to our reporting staff, we plan to expand our accountability and explanatory journalism that uncovers the players, strategies, and money behind pivotal efforts to transform our society and that points the way to new solutions that improve the lives of people around the world.

What you’ll do:

  • Research and pitch ideas for articles that go in depth in a wide range of areas where foundations and wealthy donors invest their dollars. Explore how communities affected by a philanthropic investment were served well or whether important voices – especially those an investment was designed to help – had a seat at the table.
  • Report and write articles that help our audience of donors and nonprofits understand what happened after major philanthropic investments were committed.
  • Work with the Associated Press to repurpose your reporting for a mass audience of Americans.
  • Collaborate with other journalists in the Chronicle newsroom to write in-depth features for our monthly magazine.

What you’ll bring:

  • A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years’ experience working for a professional publication or information service.
  • Demonstrated ability to rigorously research complex topics and distill them into lively, easy to read magazine style articles.
  • Experience in longform journalism, exceptional storytelling skills, versatility in learning and researching a range of topics and identifying trends, as well as creativity in selecting story assignments that will gain widespread reader attention. Experience in working with the Solutions Journalism Network is a plus.
  • Experience reporting on topics and themes that involve philanthropy and nonprofits, such as education, arts, the environment, or social change is a plus. Business coverage is also a plus.
  • Experience covering important social topics in a way that makes audiences want to engage and take action.
  • Experience and skill in creating online friendly content in collaboration with our visuals team, including a willingness to experiment with new formats that engage readers.
  • A track record covering organizations and people who reflect the diversity of the U.S. population.
  • A strong record of accuracy and ethical journalism.
  • Deadline driven, detail-oriented, proactive, organized, and reliable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to collaborate.

How to Apply: Please send your resume, cover letter, salary requirements, and five samples of published articles that demonstrate your journalistic strengths to copsearch@chronicle.com  with “Senior Reporter/Writer” in the subject heading.

Our newsroom, as well as our parent organization, the Chronicle of Higher Education, believe our missions are best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives.
