Beacon Academy closes the opportunity gap for a cadre of Boston’s bright and determined students. Through education and social advocacy, Beacon Academy helps its students create life-changing opportunities as they build lives of integrity, economic independence, and impact.

Since 2005, Beacon Academy has been focused on addressing what its founders described as “under education” in the city of Boston. Their goal was to create a “jump-year” for bright, motivated, Boston-area 8th graders. The vision was to give students the academic, social, and emotional tools they needed to earn financial aid at competitive independent high schools around New England and achieve success in high school, college, and their first careers.

Beacon realized early on that its graduates were facing racism, isolation, and other obstacles to success in their independent high schools and colleges. It became clear that more than a one-year commitment was necessary, and in response, Beacon developed its 10-Year Model. Beacon now provides support to students as they move from high school to college and beyond. Programs include support around course selection, college applications, assessing financial aid packages, and identifying internships leading to employment.

Beacon seeks an inspiring and strategic leader who is passionate about creating opportunities for young people. This person will be a/an:

Values-driven leader who is committed to the fundamental belief that all young persons should have opportunity and support to reach their full potential. Beacon’s leader must hold a deep belief that we can change the odds for young people through education. A caring and nurturing individual, the Executive Director radiates trust and leads with integrity. The individual finds deep and enduring value in authentic and lasting connections with Beacon’s parent and alumni communities.

Experienced and motivated executive with the skills and competencies to provide oversight for the operational and financial management of a growing organization. The individual must be a strategic thinker and problem solver without seeking or desiring to solve every challenge themselves; a healthy and intentional reliance on staff and volunteers is desired, as is commitment to ongoing professional development of the staff team.  A track record of successfully partnering with an active and participative governing board will be essential.  This person will establish and maintain a climate of trust in all leadership and board-related matters and maintain a learning environment, encouraging active inquiry by the Board and staff in pursuit of organizational effectiveness.

Team builder and mentor who can cultivate, develop, and inspire a united high-performing team of staff and volunteers who embody the organizational values of collaboration, trust, and respect for one another.  The Executive Director will have the temperament and skills to continue the development of talented staff as well as a demonstrated ability to bring passion, vision, direction, business discipline and inspiration to the organization.  The successful candidate will be a relationship builder and will be skilled at guiding the team to shared success.

Charismatic and persuasive communicator who can serve as the chief brand ambassador, sharing Beacon’s vision and goals by effectively communicating with a broad and diverse spectrum of the many stakeholder communities. Given the unique social and political challenges of the day, the Executive Director must be equipped to lead and drive change within the organization as well as in the public realm. A big picture thinker and ambitious leader, the Executive Director must bring an inclusive and collaborative style of communication along with the habit of being an engaged listener.

Visionary thinker and thought leader who embraces change and is open to examining different views and ways of working together while understanding the importance of Beacon’s track record and reputation for success. An adaptive leader, the Executive Director’s vision is informed by lived personal and professional experiences.

Champion of a shared commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion to amplify Beacon’s deep appreciation for difference.  Beacon students are Black and Brown. They come from families who have recently immigrated to this country and also from families with deep roots in Greater Boston’s communities of color. They are multi-lingual and practice a wide array of faiths. Beacon’s Executive Director must therefore celebrate and appreciate such diversity of identity and experience, serving as a thoughtful leader and advocate within the organization and also with partner schools. The successful candidate will be a dynamic catalyst for dialogue about issues of equity in areas of race, class, and gender.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university. Graduate degree/s and prior work in education/nonprofit leadership preferred.  Candidates with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences are strongly encouraged to apply.

Beacon Academy is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes a diverse pool of candidates
