The University of Maryland, Baltimore’s central office of philanthropy is offering a part-time Major Gifts Officer position of 10-15 hours per week.
UMB’s Schools have made it a priority to personally re-connect with their far flung network of alumni, many of whom have not heard from anyone personally in years. This role will work to connect in a meaningful fashion with specific alumni who have been identified as capable of making a significant gift.     Expectations/Responsibilities:
Handling a broad range of subject matter. This individual will learn the “elevator pitch” for each school, within the university. These may include the Schools of Dentistry, Nursing, Social Work, Law, Pharmacy, and Graduate. This position needs to quickly become proficient in their ability to identify the top talking points and philanthropic needs of each school and articulate to their audience.
Responsible for a minimum of 20- 30 outreach activities per week. This includes both emails, phone calls, virtual calls. (we should confirm this number to be sure it is not too aggressive or too minimal).
This position will be tasked with researching alumni, using UMB’s record keeping system, ADVANCE, to gain familiarity with that record. Additionally, accessing information using linkedin and search engines will provide a deeper dive to help when contacting the individual.
Using excellent interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor, this individual will attempt to re-connect with the alumni on behalf of each specific school. This will include writing emails, leaving engaging voice mails, and repeated attempts to be in touch. Potentially, this position will write notes, and follow up, post conversation.  Persistence is vital to the success of this endeavor. They will need to work independently, maintain discretion when dealing with alumni.
Additional follow up will include updating ADVANCE records and updating the Major Gifts team on each call to determine next steps. Advice post conversation will be a critical part of the debrief. This may include recommendations for engagement plans based on donor interests and philanthropic potential.
Maintaining a high degree of confidentiality, excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as attention to detail is a must for this position.

Experience: Three (3) years of philanthropy, sales, marketing, communications and/or other outreach/relationship-building skills through professional or volunteer work, education or internships.
