The University of Miami (UM) seeks a dynamic and highly accomplished development leader to serve as its head of development for Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (Sylvester) and Associate Vice President (AVP) for Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Miami. The Associate Vice President will be responsible for planning and directing all aspects of fundraising for Sylvester raising support for important cancer research and patient care at this recently National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Cancer Center. Sylvester is the only NCI-designated Cancer Center in South Florida and one of only two in Florida. Sylvester is part of the University of Miami Health System (UHealth) and the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine (Miller School of Medicine), which is the only academic medical center in the region.

Reporting to Sarah Christensen, Vice President of Medical Development and Alumni Relations, and working closely with Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., Director of Sylvester and the holder of the Oscar de la Renta Endowed Chair in Cancer Research, the AVP will lead a team poised to bring philanthropic support to a new level. The successful candidate will be a seasoned, metrics-driven fundraising leader and inspirational manager with a strong dedication to the important societal missions of universities and academic medical centers.

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center serves as the hub for cancer-related research, diagnosis and treatment at UHealth and the Miller School of Medicine. Located on the medical campus, Sylvester has established groundbreaking programs with national impact on cancer epigenetics, tumor biology and cancer control. Sylvester is recognized as one of the economic engines for the University and a top campaign priority for the University of Miami Health System and Miller School of Medicine. The Associate Vice President will work closely with Sylvester leadership to grow grateful patient fundraising, expand community giving and maximize philanthropic support.

Sylvester has raised on average $25 to $50 million per year. The incoming AVP will work closely with leadership across the University to engage key volunteers and principal gift donors in an effort to raise that average to over $50 million annually over the next several years.

The new AVP will be a strategic thinker and will possess exceptional leadership qualities such as an open, creative problem-solving approach, and a collaborative and collegial spirit. The new AVP will have a record of accomplishment of significant achievements in development, preferably within an academic medical institution or a highly complex, multidivisional and matrixed institution. Leadership experience in a campaign setting is required, and the new AVP will have a personal record of accomplishment as a principal gift fundraiser and a builder of successful development programs.
