ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Accountant plays a key role in advancing Hebrew Free Loan’s mission of helping members of Northern California’s Jewish community achieve financial self-sufficiency. The Senior Accountant performs the full range of functions needed to ensure a strong financial operation. Responsibilities include basic, hands-on bookkeeping and accounting, assisting with budgeting and financial planning, preparing financial reports, and handling administrative aspects of human resources, risk management, and investment oversight.

 

Reports to the Finance Director and provides accounting support to the fundraising and loan program teams. Will be part of a ten-person staff based in San Francisco.

 

ABOUT HEBREW FREE LOAN 

For 124 years, Hebrew Free Loan has been helping individuals and families throughout Northern California’s Jewish community overcome challenges and pursue their dreams. Based on the Jewish values of tzedakah (justice/charity), gemilut hasadim (acts of loving kindness), and tikkun olam (repairing the world), we provide interest-free loans to meet a wide range of needs. Loan types include small business, debt consolidation, fertility, first-time homebuyer, student, and many others.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Bookkeeping/Accounting & Reporting

  • Ensure accuracy of general ledger
  • Verify, allocate, post, and reconcile accounts payable and receivable
  • Prepare detailed journal entries and account analyses
  • Maintain and update chart of accounts
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes
  • Produce loan activity and other financial reports
  • Prepare documentation for external auditors
  • Assist with tax audits and tax returns
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls

Cash & Investments

  • Prepare bank deposits
  • Process credit card donations and loan payments
  • Assist with loan payment ACH processing
  • Enter donations into Salesforce and produce acknowledgement letters
  • Handle all aspects of accounts payable function
  • Reconcile bank and credit card transactions
  • Reconcile loan software with general ledger
  • Serve as liaison with financial institutions

Other Functions

  • Handle payroll and benefits administration
  • Perform detailed spreadsheet work to prepare mailing lists
  • Provide general administrative support as needed

 

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strategic and analytical thinker 
  • Proficient with technology, especially databases and word processing
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software required; knowledge of Salesforce and FundEZ a plus
  • A BA degree at minimum, and ideally an Accounting degree or certification, or commensurate experience
  • At least 5 years of professional accounting experience, with a minimum of 2 years of nonprofit experience
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with programmatic and fundraising colleagues who may not have finance backgrounds; skilled at translating financial concepts into layperson’s terms
  • Keen analytic and problem-solving skills that support and enable sound decision-making
