Greenpeace is a global, independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future. For fifty years, Greenpeace has fought to save the planet from the threat of the climate crisis, destruction of ancient forests, deterioration of our oceans, and the threat of a nuclear disaster. To combat these environmental challenges, we rely on a 20 person strong Fundraising staff and nearly  two hundred thousand financial supporters across the United States that give their all in our fight together for a green and peaceful future.  As such, we are hiring a highly qualified Development Director, Marketing to lead the strategy, implementation and day-to-day operations of Greenpeace USA’s mass fundraising programs for Greenpeace Inc (a 501c4 organization), and Greenpeace Fund (a 501c3 organization) including: the direct mail, telemarketing (in-house and agency), monthly donor acquisition and retention, and online giving. This position is also responsible for testing new channels of donor acquisition. 

We are currently seeking a highly ambitious, innovative, entrepreneurial, and seasoned development professional to manage and inspire our strong fundraising team and to help guide our campaign staff in developing relevant and inspirational stories to help fund our work. The Development Director, Marketing serves as a member of the  Development Leadership Team which provides leadership on overall organizational fundraising strategy, management, and program development and integration. This is a full-time, exempt position.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience managing a large and diverse team, driving significant growth and deep experience in multi-channel fundraising/direct marketing. Experience managing a successful online giving program is required.  Experience working in a global organization is also desired.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Build a strategic digital fundraising program. This includes creating digital specific strategies, as well as incorporating best use of digital tools and techniques into all fundraising programs. Work with the Chief Development Officer to assess current digital fundraising and create ambitious revenue, donor recruitment and performance plans. Assess staffing needs and recruit and train digital staff as needed. The expectation around this program is rapid growth in revenue and donors numbers. This requires ability to quickly assess opportunities for improvement and implement short-term strategies while building out a longer-term data-driven plan. 
  • Manage digital ad work as part of overall digital fundraising program. Manage ad investment levels in donation and lead acquisition. Ensure the right mix of newly acquired leads to funnel to the telemarketing team, as well as monthly and one-time direct to donation ads that generate immediate income.
  • Manage direct marketing program for lower and mid-level giving. Assess current marketing programs and identify areas for improvement and growth in revenue and donor numbers. Provide management and mentorship to in-house team and oversight of agency partner. The expectation around this program is improved retention of donors and increased revenue. Requires experience with creation and execution of direct mail strategies that have led to strategic growth.
  • Manage a growing telemarketing program including agency and in-house. Manage team building an in-house program to execute two-step digitally acquired lead conversion. Requires knowledge and experience with best practices in telemarketing and ability to set and adjust KPI’s accordingly, including staff performance metrics.  Prior management of an in-house team highly preferred.
  • Test new acquisition channels as well as upgrade techniques. Identify, implement and monitor new strategies to recruit monthly and one-time donors. This requires an entrepreneurial mindset that seeks out the latest trends and techniques in fundraising and adapts to quickly test new initiatives and learn and adapt. Proven experience starting new fundraising initiatives and quickly scaling for success is highly preferred. 
  • In collaboration with the Chief Development Officer and Development Leadership team, develop a clear vision and fundraising plan to achieve ambitious long-term financial growth for the organization.  
  • Provide leadership to development managers in executing the implementation of annual and multi-year development strategies and plans for all aspects of Greenpeace fundraising program, including short- and long-term measurable goals.
  • Supervising all aspects of the $24 million dollar income and $8 million dollar expenditure development budgets, including development, implementation, tracking, and regular reporting to staff, the senior management team and the boards of directors.
  • Ensuring the integration of fundraising programs and strategies within the department and across the organization 
  • Engage diverse audiences in Greenpeace’s fundraising work, reaching the diversity of Americans who care about our environment and health.
  • Continually strengthening an understanding within the organization about development as a form of activism, communication, and education, and working with the SMT, development managers, board of directors, and programmatic staff to cultivate a culture of philanthropy in the organization.
  • Regularly monitoring and reviewing all vendors providing services to Greenpeace’s development program against agreed budgets and performance criteria.
  • Prepare  monthly, quarterly, and annual reports and financial analyses for the Senior Management Team as well as presentations for the Board(s) of Directors on progress toward financial goals, and provide guidance and direction to achieve objectives.
  • Work closely with the Senior Management team on organizational strategy by being an active participant of the Strategic Leadership Team. Partner with other members of the Strategic Leadership Team on special cross-organizational projects. 

Experience and Qualifications: 

  • 7 to 10 years of proven success in fundraising for advocacy related issues, and at least five years in managing large and complex teams.
  • Expertise and demonstrated experience in managing successful digital fundraising programs, including email marketing and digital acquisition are required. Proven ability to integrate digital fundraising into other areas of fundraising and create multi-channel programs is essential.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in monthly giving fundraising programs, including leadership of programs for the acquisition and retention of monthly supporters.
  • Proven expertise in telemarketing management, particularly lead-conversion and monthly giving telemarketing programs.
  • Commitment to data analysis, testing and entrepreneurship. 
  • Strong management skill set and the ability to motivate, inspire, and develop a diverse staff, including team members working around the country.

Additional requirements  include, but are not limited to:

  • Experience implementing and managing the operational infrastructure required for a successful development program, including database systems and vendor and finance management. 
  • Ability to work closely across departments and teams to develop and execute communications, marketing, or public relations strategies to support resource development.
  • Strong commitment to strengthening and increasing awareness within the organization of fundraising as a form of activism, communication, and education, and 
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field or equivalent experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, and the capacity to interact effectively with a broad range of individuals and organizations.
  • Strong management skill set and the ability to motivate, inspire, and develop a diverse staff to meet goals and objectives.
  • Open to learning, in particular, from the fundraising experience of other countries.
  • A passion for the work of Greenpeace USA and a desire to continually broaden and deepen the organization’s impact.

  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed
