Major Gifts Officer Overview

 

The Major Gifts Officer (MGO) is responsible for implementing fundraising strategies designed to increase major gift revenue to Penny Appeal USA. The MGO is primarily responsible for qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors who give $5,000+ annually. The Major Gift Officer reports to the Chief Development Officer.

 

Key Areas of Responsibility

Fundraising

  1. Manage a portfolio of 150-200 major gift donors and prospects who are capable of giving $5,000+ annually by qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors while ensuring donors are upgraded and retained.
  2. Present planned giving opportunities as appropriate for assigned donors/prospects.
  3. Achieve or exceed established fundraising metrics (number of meetings, number of proposals submitted, gifts closed, etc).
  4. Leverage existing relationships to identify new major donor prospects.
  5. Develop and implement personalized strategies to ensure assigned constituents move forward in the donor engagement process according to best practices.
  6. Draft highly professional written and electronic donor communications as needed.
  7. Effectively communicate Penny Appeal USA’s funding priorities in a compelling manner, highlighting the direct impact philanthropy has on program recipients.
  8. Conduct virtual and in-person meetings with prospects/donors and involve the Chief Development Officer, the Chief Executive Officer, and Board members as appropriate.
  9. Utilize volunteer relationships to advance major donors’ and prospects’ relationship with Penny Appeal USA as needed.
  10. Travel nationally and internationally approximately 50% of the time and work nights and weekends as needed.
  11. Prepare and complete contact reports in a timely fashion to document all activities related to fundraising goals and objectives.
  12. Prepare customized major gift proposals to be presented virtually or in-person and draft personalized gift agreements.
  13. Participate in fundraising initiatives for major gift donors/prospects and other constituents as assigned.
  14. Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer to develop and implement annual plans for cultivating, upgrading, soliciting, and stewarding unassigned major gift donor/prospects.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Events

  1. Collaborate with the events department to develop and implement major donor fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship virtual and in-person events.
  2. Analyze and evaluate major donor events in order to inform future strategy.

 

Donor Relations

  1. Partner with Donor Relations to ensure all assigned major gift donors are effectively stewarded.

 

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university.
  2. At least three years of individual giving experience or transferable expertise.
  3. Track record of successfully and strategically engaging donors and prospects through the moves management cycle.
  4. Demonstrated success in raising significant individual gifts ($25k or more).
  5. Experience with upgrading donors and building a donor pipeline.
  6. Adept at dealing with sensitive political and social situations.
  7. Ability to work in a fast-pace environment and pivot priorities when needed.
  8. Willing and able to travel approximately 50 percent of the time (when it is safe resume a typical travel schedule).
  9. Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  10. A strong communicator with excellent writing abilities, with emphasis on clear and compelling proposals and email communications.
  11. A natural team player who enjoys supporting and collaborating with colleagues.
  12. Knowledge of and experience working with using Salesforce or similar CRM software.
  13. A demonstrated interest and commitment to the mission of PA USA. Experience addressing issues of poverty and socio-economic disparities preferred.
  14. Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills along with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Location: HQ is located in Alexandria, VA but position is open to remote work as long as applicant resides in the US.
