Job Overview

Serving as a key member of the Development Leadership Team and reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development (AVC-D), the Executive Director will oversee regional and centrally-based major gift programs and partner with the AVC-D to further develop the strategy for the major and principal gift programs.  The Executive Director will be a key member of the University Relations team that leads the preparation, launch, and execution of the university's next comprehensive fundraising campaign.

The Executive Director will manage a portfolio of approximately 50 major gift prospects capable of making gifts of $100,000 or more.  Through guidance, direction and management of staff, and working in cooperation with colleagues across the campus, the Executive Director will ensure the development of quality donor relationships that result in substantial support for university goals and priorities.  The Executive Director will work with the Vice Chancellor and AVCs in University Relations, along with senior leadership across the campus to help develop large-scale interdisciplinary fundraising initiatives and translate campus-wide strategy and campaign priorities into donor strategies.

Job Duties
50% - Management:
  • In partnership with the Director, Prospect Management and Research, review major gift portfolios to ensure assignments are aligned to maximize donor potential
  • Analyze opportunities and create strategic plans for fundraising in geographic regions 
  • Facilitate coordination between central/regional gift officers with academic directors of development on fundraising strategies and donor relationships
  • Partner with leadership in alumni relations and special events to help ensure outreach activities are supporting fundraising strategies
  • Partner with AVC-D to align fundraising strategies with campus priorities
  • Recruit, train, mentor, guide, and evaluate staff
  • Track and review major gift officer performance metrics; ensure metrics are driving desired outcomes; ensure outcomes are being achieved
  • In coordination with AVC-D, provide leadership to Development team meetings, plans, and reporting to ensure goals are being implemented and outcomes are being achieved

30% - Fundraising/Portfolio Management:
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 50 high net worth individuals
  • Develop, document, and implement donor strategies that lead to gifts of $100,000+
  • Build and facilitate relationships that move donors along the commitment continuum
  • Secure gifts totaling $1,000,000+ annually

20% - Campaign Planning and Implementation (20%): 
  • As part of the Campaign Leadership Team, partner with university leaders to translate campus-wide strategies into campaign priorities and donor strategies
  • Provide leadership in the development of campaign case stating materials
  • Collaborate with University Relations and campus leadership to implement the campaign volunteer structure
  • Support major gift officers in leveraging volunteer strengths to support the campaign

Required Qualifications
  • Excellent knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations including advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
  • Excellent knowledge of leadership / management concepts, procedures, techniques and best practices.
  • Excellent leadership / management skills to select, train, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communications skills, including excellent political acumen skills, to build and maintain effective working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
  • Excellent skills in meeting predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts and meeting fundraising goals.
  • Excellent strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical, problem-solving, persuasion / negotiation skills and marketing skills.
