Organization Overview
Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) is a transnational network of grantmakers committed to strengthening Latino communities across the Americas. HIP connects and convenes funders, nonprofits, researchers, and other leaders to identify emerging needs among Latinos as well as best practices for responsive and effective funding of social change. HIP pioneers new philanthropic models by leading collaborative initiatives and has provided grants and training to help build the capacity of more than 600 organizations and leaders.

For nearly four decades, HIP has nurtured community strength and leadership to shift the balance of power to those historically discounted and disadvantaged, allowing them agency over their lives and the ability to be dynamic actors in the creation of their own impact narrative. When they are at decision-making tables, when they are represented in leadership positions, when there is equity in access to basic services, and when the means to thrive equitably sits in their hands -- this is when our community thrives. Along these lines, HIP will work to build a multiracial democracy campaign by investing in movement building, racial justice, policy advocacy, protection and expansion of safe civic space and discourse, voting and civic engagement. Through this lens, HIP’s existing work will be impacted, integrated, and amplified (i.e., gender equity, migration, small business investment, narrative change).

Position Summary
The Associate Director will be responsible for building policy, grantmaking, and grantee and funder engagement strategies to identify HIP’s role and function in ensuring multiracial democracy building at every level of political life with Latinx communities in close alliance with other BIPOC communities. This role will require substantive civic engagement, movement building, grassroots organizing and policy analysis and recommendations. Collaborating closely with the Associate Director of Policy, as well as programs and communications staff, the Associate Director will develop and implement advocacy and civic engagement strategies that further HIP’s campaign priorities. The Associate Director will focus primarily on U.S. campaigns and provide support for our Mexico-based team to support the development of democracy building work in other Latin American locations as possible and resource-dependent.

Core Responsibilities

  • Build HIP’s strategy for the Multiracial Democracy Building campaign with a intersectoral lens across civic engagement, movement building, and racial justice;
  • Drive Multiracial Democracy Building campaigns, in close collaboration with programmatic and communications teams, to increase resources to community groups and convene and inform relevant actors including funders and grantee partners;
  • Lead centralized capacity building initiatives with grantees in coordination with consultants and field experts;
  • Lead grantmaking efforts in support of campaign priorities;
  • Monitor relative legislative and regulatory activity and produce high impact policy analysis and recommendations;
  • Work with our communications teams to produce timely campaign statements, talking points, and other materials and messaging to advance HIP’s campaign’s agenda and inform key actors (ie funders and grantees) of campaign developments and pending issues;
  • Provide editorial support and guidance to executive leadership;
  • Develop and manage key partnerships in advancing civic engagement, movement building and advocacy strategies in priority issue areas, in close collaboration with the Associate Director of Policy and Advocacy; and
  • Represent HIP to external audiences, informing and educating the philanthropy sector, external and internal stakeholders about issues impacting Latinx communities.


  • Seven or more years of civic engagement, movement building, leadership development or related experience;
  • Deep knowledge and demonstrated experience in analyzing policy and advocacy issues affecting Latinx communities;
  • Expertise in one (or more) of HIP’s priority areas (ie migration, gender equity, racial and ethnic justice, LGBTQ communities, powerbuilding and civic engagement), and/or place based work (the southwest and southeast preferred);
  • Proven track record of influencing policy outcomes and successfully building partnerships and coalitions with grassroots organizations, managing advocacy/ movement building campaigns;
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize complex information, discern key issues of interest, and communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing;
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills;
  • Demonstrated experience successfully building relationships, coalitions and campaigns with diverse stakeholders while maintaining diplomacy;
  • Demonstrated project management experience and success managing multiple projects at the same time;
  • Ability to thrive in a highly collaborative environment while also possessing the ability to work well independently with minimal supervision;
  • Strong organizational skills, detail oriented, and the ability to consistently meet deadlines;
  • Skilled public speaker;
  • Grant management and funder engagement experience;
  • Commitment to HIP’s mission and values, including racial equity;
  • Ability to work remotely with virtual teams across the U.S. and in Mexico City; and
  • Ability to travel as needed.

Desired Qualifications

  • Fluent in English and Spanish;
  • Previous nonprofit experience; and
  • Familiarity with foundations and grantmaking institutions, intermediary philanthropy, and the role of philanthropy support organizations.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Daily use of computer and phone for regular communications with staff and team members. This position may be a remote position or based out of the Oakland office. Some travel will be required.
