The Director of Development oversees a small department made up of a full-time Grants Manager, a part-time Development Assistant/Feminist-in-Residence, and an occasional consultant. This executive level position is responsible for and oversees: (1) all phases of fundraising, including engagement with foundations, corporations, government agencies, individuals, special events, and direct appeals; (2) identifying and cultivating pro bono and in-kind supporters; and, (3) working closely with other departments, including communications, to align messaging about GBH programs.
The Director of Development works very closely with the Executive Director, other Executive Staff, the Board of Directors, and outside consultants to identify and raise the funding necessary to help the organization grow and invest in existing and new programming, all aimed at increasing the opportunities and successes of our participants.
The Director of Development is the chief fundraising and public relations strategist for the agency and is a member of the executive management team.
Developing the overall fundraising
and public relations goals, targets and strategies for the
Researching, identifying and
cultivating foundations, corporations, civic and religious
organizations, and individuals.
Planning and coordinating special
events and fundraising activities for the organization, including
identifying event leadership and working with Board Members and
others to recruit sponsors, vendors, supporters and
Overseeing donor and foundation
records/database, stewardship activities, and cultivation.
Strengthening ties with existing
supporters, re-connecting with former supporters, and developing
effective strategies for identifying and soliciting new
Overseeing the organization’s major
donor and sustained giving programs.
Overseeing corporate partnerships and
Overseeing Development Department
staff and consultants.
Working with members of the Board of
Directors, Youth Advisory Council, our junior board (the
“Amplifiers”) and others to identify prospects and develop
individualized giving plans and tasks.
Defining, measuring, and tracking
Development Department performance metrics.
Ensuring that Development Department
staff receive appropriate training and professional
Attending meetings of the Board of
Directors, several Board Committees, and the Executive Management
Additional projects and duties as
assigned by the Executive Director.
The ideal Director of Development candidate will have the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in related field;
Master’s Degree in related field a plus.
Ability to lead and motivate staff,
encourage teamwork, and create a culture of
Extensive knowledge of and contacts
in the philanthropic and donor sectors.
A deep appreciation for the
organization’s mission and the importance of its work, and an
ability to eloquently articulate the organization’s goals, vision
At least 5 years of relevant work
experience with a comparable or larger size organization.
A comprehensive knowledge of all key
fundraising functions and strategies.
Demonstrated success in planning and
executing major fundraising events and campaigns, including
attracting and maintaining major gifts from individuals and
Demonstrated success submitting
winning foundation or corporate grant proposals including large
grants ($100+ annually) or multi-year funding.
Exceptional writing and editing
skills, including the ability to persuasively convey program
results through proposals, reports, and donor
Understanding and knowledge of data,
data metrics, and data capture and how it informs planning and
Experience working closely with Board
members to enhance and leverage the organization’s fundraising
A track record of effective
organizational communication and media relations, including
garnering print, broadcast, and online coverage.
Unquestioned personal and
Innovative and analytic
A dedicated work ethic, including a
desire to be a hands-on team member.
A keen eye for detail, and an
understanding of the importance of meeting deadlines.
Superior organizational, time
management, and interpersonal skills.
Excellent computer skills. Microsoft
Word and Excel experience required; Salesforce/Database experience
Girl Be Heard is a NYC-based nonprofit that builds leaders and activists. We do this by developing, amplifying, and celebrating the voices of girls, young women and gender expansive youth through socially conscious theatre-making, story-telling, and performance. We have approximately 30 full- and part-time staff in NYC and a program in Trinidad and Tobago.
