Operating in its 25th year, Free Speech TV (FSTV) is a national, nonprofit, independent news network whose mission is to empower an informed and active citizenry to build a more just, equitable world. Powered by their viewers, FSTV amplifies the voices not heard on the corporate networks and lifts up the efforts of everyday people working on the front lines of social, economic, environmental, and racial justice. Using the power of media, FSTV believes it can help foster a just, kind, and sustainable world built by people who are inspired by diverse voices, surprising conversations, and fearless truth-telling.

Led by Co-Founder and Executive Director Jon Stout, Free Speech TV airs 24/7 with daily news programs like Democracy Now! and The Thom Hartmann Program, weekly current affairs series like Gay USA and Economic Update, award-winning documentaries, and special coverage of events and movements like Netroots Nation, Bioneers and the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. FSTV reaches 40 million US homes via DISH, DIRECTV, local cable affiliates, Sling TV, Roku, Apple TV, Alexa, Amazon Fire, social media and The organization consistently experiences strong growth in viewership and above average outcomes for viewer support projections.

To allow FSTV to continue advancing social change and operating in service to the broader social justice movement, it has created a new role for an Associate Development Director (ADD) who will increase fundraising capacity. The ADD will be responsible for expanding and formalizing the major gifts program and helping to elevate the overall fundraising strategy. They will join a highly collaborative team that takes a mission-first approach to the work.

Reporting to Development Director Kristi Frahm Gallagher, the ADD will have the privilege of partnering with an energized, impassioned, and loyal donor base to realize social impact through philanthropy. The ADD will be responsible for the build-out of a national major gifts program, leveraging FSTV’s robust donor base of 20,000+ active supporters to solicit both restricted and unrestricted dollars, and formalizing the planned giving program. While the ADD will focus on growth and moves management within the major giving program to ensure a pipeline of major gifts, they will also serve as a thought partner to the Development Director in the design and implementation of the overarching fundraising strategy.

The organization’s fundraising activity occurs across a wide spectrum including foundation grants, planned gifts, major gifts ($10K+), mid-range gifts ($1K - $9999) and small gifts from direct appeals and quarterly pledge drives that typically engage 1,000 new donors per drive. To be successful, the ADD must align mid-range, major, and planned giving strategies to affect a coordinated approach to concurrent fundraising activities taking place across the organization.  They will have the support of a Donor Relations Associate with long-standing donor relationships, and who is responsible for closing mid-range gifts and securing matches for pledge challenges. The ADD will oversee the work of the Donor Relations Associate and seek out opportunities to share learnings and partner together on developing individual donor strategies.

The successful candidate for the Associate Development Director will be a mission-driven fundraiser with a deep commitment to building a more inclusive, just and equitable society. They will bring technical expertise in the science of fundraising and moves management with a proven track record in both major and planned giving, and an authentic donor engagement style. They will also be a natural collaborator with an entrepreneurial approach that is grounded in evidence-based practices, and a critical thinker with a data-driven mindset. An understanding of current events, politics, and the progressive movement will be critical to the success of this role, as will a familiarity with the media landscape.

With the election behind us and the nation undergoing a long overdue reckoning with systemic racism, this moment represents one of promise and change for America. In joining Free Speech TV, you will have the opportunity to help build a better society for all and create lasting impact by supporting a platform for voices and points of view traditionally excluded from television, including those of women, people of color, indigenous people, those made poor at home and abroad, LGBT communities, people with disabilities, and youth.
