Job Summary

The Consultant is an individual who has experience in the areas of fundraising, development, and/or nonprofit consulting. The Consultant will lead some client teams while working under the mentorship and leadership of experienced Senior Consultants on others, will manage client relationships, perform various components of service delivery based on client needs, and expand the firm’s business through business development, sales, and thought leadership opportunities. The Consultant will be assigned to our Healthcare Practice but will act as a generalist and frequently work across sectors before potentially determining a specialty, which may include nonprofit universities, colleges, independent schools, museums, premier healthcare, environmental, and arts organizations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and elsewhere. The individual will report to one of our Managing Principals and will work closely with consultants at all levels in the practice as part of a team to enable our clients to be successful in meeting their missions. 

Position Details

Participate in client engagements by providing service delivery:

  • Performs in the role of lead on some client engagements, serving as the primary point of contact with the client in meetings, communications, and day-to-day activities
  • When serving as the lead, independently directs the completion of feasibility interviews, assessments, and other deliverables, taking ownership of delivery to the client
  • When performing the role of team member, takes leadership role in completing reports either by drafting directly or providing oversight to Associate Consultants, frequently reviewing draft deliverables before sending to the lead

Drive business through marketing and thought leadership:

  • Identifies opportunities for renewing and extending work with existing clients, working to execute against that goal
  • Takes leadership role in sales presentations for new work, organizing and delivering information to potential clients
  • Reviews and edits proposals before final submission
  • Gains exposure to market/practice development, building pipelines, and cultivating business leads
  • Identifies opportunities to contribute to the field of philanthropy in an area of specialty (such as practice and/or sub-practice) or technical skill (such as analytics, data, and/or communications) through thought leadership

 Contributes to the growth of the firm through internal activities:

  • Provides mentorship and training to other firm members in areas of service delivery
  • Takes leadership role in firm-wide initiatives and activities, either by leading workstreams or significant bodies of work 
Skills/Knowledge/Experience
  • Demonstrated analytical and strategic thinking
  • Strong relationship management, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle multiple, competing priorities and successfully see projects from inception to completion adhering to strict, and often moving, deadlines
  • Technical literacy; strong experience with MS Office software – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint – some experience with SQL, SPSS, Advizor, Tableau, R, Python or Adobe Professional is a plus
  • Proficiency in gathering, analyzing and synthesizing data
  • Knowledge of, and passion for, the advancement of philanthropy
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Graduate degree preferred
  • 7+ years of experience working in a nonprofit; experience in a development/fundraising capacity and/or prior experience in a consulting role preferred

It is anticipated that this person will work out of their home with the necessary equipment and supplies to perform their duties provided by Marts & Lundy. This position typically will require project-based travel (outside of pandemic restrictions) and may include overnight and airplane travel for several days during the week.
