Vice President of Development Position Harrington Discovery Institute (HDI) at University Hospitals Health System seeks nominations and applications for an experienced Vice President of Development leading major national and international philanthropic initiatives. This is a unique opportunity to work for a $500MM nonprofit drug development institute whose novel approach to creating new medicines for disease areas of great unmet need includes a variety of sustainable philanthropic funding opportunities, from traditional philanthropy to social impact funding.

The Vice President (VP) of Development is a new position co-reporting to the President of HDI and HDI’s funding collaborative, Morgan Stanley Global Impact Funding Trust (GIFT). The VP of Development will also collaborate alongside HDI’s external fundraising counsel, CCS Fundraising.

The VP of Development is the driver of all individual and institutional giving work, and is responsible for the oversight, planning, strategy and execution of all fundraising activities that support and advance HDI’s mission and special initiatives. The VP of Development is responsible for the management of all fundraising endeavors, and actively collaborates with the Founder, President, affiliate leaders, partners and staff to define and implement an overarching advancement strategy. The position leads the HDI development office and coordinates closely with fundraising counsel. The VP will manage HDI’s development staff and will be expected to help leadership advance the department’s growth long-term.

Fundraising and stewardship efforts will be conducted at the local, national, and international levels with a focus on (ultra) high net worth prospects, including individuals, families, foundations, institutions, and corporations. The VP of Development will leverage their expertise, experience, and network to open doors and create transformational philanthropic opportunities to support, grow, and sustain the institution’s fundraising revenue. With significant fundraising acumen and the ability to develop robust and enduring relationships, the VP of Development will provide thought partnership across the organization and its institutional partners.

Roles and Responsibilities The VP will be an accomplished fundraising leader who will draw on their knowledge of best practices and strong management experience to advance effective development operations, help achieve ambitious revenue goals, and drive fundraising momentum. Engaging a broad spectrum of prospective donors to promote organizational growth and diversify its revenue streams, the VP provides meaningful, fulfilling giving experiences, proactively learning about personal philanthropic passions and soliciting support for HDI’s mission.

Fundraising Strategy, Infrastructure and Training
• Function as the programmatic and fundraising lead for a large-scale fundraising initiative across local, national, and international markets.

• Oversee implementation of an overall strategic fundraising plan that applies innovative fundraising tools to take advantage of unique and evolving financial growth opportunities and supports the long-term growth of the organization.
• Manage the internal team overseeing strategy and execution alongside leadership and staff to ensure consistent implementation and communications across stakeholders. • Establish, maintain, and manage a portfolio of approximately 150+ high net-worth individuals, families, and private foundations from cultivation to solicitation, and stewardship, with a focus on seven-, eight-, and nine-figure requests. • Develop and implement comprehensive cultivation, briefing, and solicitation strategies for prospective and current leadership gift donors, focusing on individual engagement that qualifies capacity, builds rapport, and identifies philanthropic passions and interests; this includes the generation of letters, tailored gift proposals, reports and other donor communications.
• Lead, attend and organize personal cultivation and briefing meetings with prospects and make direct face-to-face solicitations, and assist committee members, leadership, and other staff with their solicitations (e.g. provide portfolio development support, strategic counsel, and help with donor communications), with a focus on closing gifts of $1M+, and consistently closing gifts of $10M+.
• Work closely with key faculty, clinicians, scientists, leadership and volunteers to identify gift opportunities, establish relationships with grateful patients and friends, and execute cultivation/solicitation strategies to maximize gift potential.
• Create, execute, and manage quarterly and annual engagement and solicitation plans for each qualified donor in the pipeline.
• Draw on all available resources and support staff to produce prospect research, proposals, and stewardship assets at minimal to maintain focus on donor-facing activity.
• Demonstrate and reinforce a collaborative leadership with staff, colleagues, and key partners and contribute to a team-oriented culture.
• Promote an organization-wide culture of philanthropy, ensuring it remains an institutional priority among leadership and Board members.
• Maintain a high level of confidentiality; manage fundraising efforts record keeping, evaluate progress towards goals, prepare periodic reports on fundraising and present to the Board, senior staff, and key partners; recommend revisions to the fundraising plan, as needed, to meet goals.
• Work with the Founder, President, affiliate leaders and staff to ensure coordination, consistency in performance, goal setting, and strategic communications.
• Provide oversight on all donor communications and develop a long-term communications plan as it relates to donors and prospective donors.

• Advise and manage Advisory Board, Committee, and volunteer communications, and collaborate on an ongoing basis with fundraising staff and volunteers regarding cultivation, briefing and solicitation activity. 

Gift Management
• Oversee data tracking and management processes.
• Coordinate with relevant parties to negotiate terms of and manage procurement process of gifts.
• Draft all gift and recognition agreements; collaborate with legal counsel from the donors, HDI, University Hospitals, Morgan Stanley and other affiliates on negotiation and completion of agreements.
• Oversee the management of donor invoicing and pledge redemption.

Donor Stewardship
• Work closely with key external partners to plan, develop and supervise the implementation of targeted prospect engagement strategies that build a strong donor collaborative, including the production and execution of small- and large-scale donor events, webinars, presentations, follow-up, and additional touchpoints and learning opportunities in the stewardship journey.
• Generate and track all donor recognition activities including acknowledgement letters, inclusion of donors in all appropriate materials, website, events, etc.; and appropriate gift recognition signage at HDI.
• Coordinate with the Marketing and Communications team for production of the annual report, as well as other donor-specific reports in keeping with gift contracts and donor stewardship.

Qualifications/Requirements:
• Twelve years of experience working in large-scale fundraising organizations, including five to eight years experience of consistently closing seven- to nine-figure gifts across individuals, corporations, and foundations.
• Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree in healthcare or business-related field preferred.
• Experience in an academic, research, or hospital/health care environment is desired.
• Exposure to national and international fundraising markets and familiarity with charitable instruments and sophisticated funding vehicles. Ideal candidates have experience in impact investing and alternative philanthropic funding vehicles.
• Demonstrated experience soliciting and closing seven-figure gifts, or the equivalent.
• Demonstrated success identifying and qualifying new prospects.

• Experience in strategic communications, brand, programming, and consumer experience.
• Professional credibility, high level of integrity, intellectual depth, good judgement, considerable creativity, passion for fundraising and collaborative skills to garner the trust and confidence of senior administration, institutional leaders, senior staff, volunteers, and other key constituents.
• Superior interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of constituencies and to lead and manage through influence.
• Comprehensive knowledge of all fundraising approaches, with special expertise and understanding of capital campaigns, grateful patient model and principal and major gifts.
• A team player with senior management counterparts, possessing collaborative instincts, an inclination to integrate efforts, and a tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty in a highly complex environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication with both internal and external constituents; excellent relationship building skills, with demonstrated presentation abilities and ability to deliver a compelling and persuasive case for philanthropic support for the mission, programs, and special initiatives at HDI.
• Demonstrated staff management capabilities.
• Proficiency in MS Office and CRM systems (Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce, etc.).
• New York-based preferred but not required, with travel to Cleveland as well as additional domestic and international travel as needed.

 

This position is accepting remote applications. At Morgan Stanley and HDI, we are currently working remotely and will return to the office when it is safe. In addition, domestic and international travel will be expected once it is safe to do so.
