Common Cause Education Fund (CCEF) seeks an experienced and creative Senior Philanthropic Advisor. The Senior Philanthropic Advisor (SPA) develops and implements donor-centric strategies to manage a portfolio of national major donors.

This position will be responsible for prospecting, soliciting and stewarding a portfolio of individual donors, family foundations and donor advised funds with the capacity to make transformational annual or multi-annual gifts; and solicit and steward individual prospects for legacy gifts.

The SPA monitors and reports on progress on a weekly basis, ensuring that revenue and engagement goals are met.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Individual Donors, Family Foundations, Donor Advised Funds & Planned Giving

  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of 100 prospects and current donors with the capacity to make significant donations and/or planned gifts—collaborating with management team, Board of Directors, state leadership, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Design and execute individualized cultivation and stewardship plans for portfolio that will exceed donor engagement and revenue goals for the fiscal year.
  • Meetings and conference calls to cultivate, solicit and steward donors at in-person meetings.
  • Working with the Deputy Director for Major Gifts and a team of senior fundraising professionals, establish annual and multi-year revenue strategies and goals, to include evaluation of results and development of new approaches as needed.
  • Maintain donor records in ROI database and provide a monthly analysis of donor performance related to such things as retention, growth, upgrades, etc.
  • Coordinate with Development, Digital and Communications staff, and, where appropriate, the Board of Director’s Development Committee on major donor communications, stewardship and recognition activities including acknowledgements, special events, and mailings of donor updates.
  • Assist with special projects and perform other related duties that contribute to the Development department and Common Cause goals as assigned to include drafting correspondence, strategic plans, proposals, invitations and reports.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a proven, successful track record of hands-on experience identifying, cultivating, soliciting/upgrading, closing and stewarding major gifts. Minimum of 5 years of experience required for consideration.
  • Must have the ambition to confidently ask for monetary and in-kind contributions.
  • Must have a profound understanding of moves management strategy and the capability to design and execute donor-centric engagement activities.
  • Must be capable of using CRM databases and other technology tools.
  • Must have exemplary verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must have proven successes in a deadline-driven environment with shifting demands and priorities.
  • Must have the professional and emotional intelligence to work with high-level organization leaders, staff and volunteers.
  • Must have the flexibility to travel frequently, work evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong working knowledge of the broad philanthropic landscape, prospect research methodology, best practices and evolving trends in philanthropy highly preferred.
  • Experience managing a multi-state portfolio highly preferred.

Competencies:

  • Exemplary writing, oral and interpersonal communication skills are necessary.
  • Must be proficient in research, to include navigating databases and online resources.
  • The ability and willingness to provide excellent service and to work with staff, Board of Directors, Development committee, donors and other constituencies.
  • Perform exceptionally well under pressure, while managing multiple projects with a high degree of accuracy and diplomacy.
  • Must maintain a high level of professionalism, honesty, and reliability and be able to handle confidential information with discretion.

Required Education and Experience:

Demonstrated years in development, major gifts fundraising, public relations, and/or strategic marketing with primary or significant writing responsibility. Higher education and/or advanced certification preferred.

Required Skills/Abilities

Must be an exceptionally strong, persuasive, and concise Development writer and communicator. Excellent editing and proofreading skills, attentive to message, detail, branding and style standards. Must be highly organized, able to juggle many competing priorities simultaneously, and comfortable establishing organization-wide streamlined processes and procedures as it relates to this role and its responsibilities. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, fundraising databases and donor research tools.

Additional Skill/Abilities

  • Familiarity with 501 (c)3 and 501 (c)4 non-profit organizations and the legal distinctions between both entities.
  • Experience developing fundraising communications for democracy related initiatives and programs.
  • The ability to navigate fundraising databases, specifically Revolution Online (ROI), Donor Search, and other research tools.
