Development Director, LGBTQ Youth Homelessness
Co-founded by Cyndi Lauper, True Colors United implements innovative solutions to youth homelessness by focusing on the unique experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. The Development Director will be responsible for creating and implementing the fundraising and donor stewardship strategy for True Colors United. Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director & CEO, the Director will significantly grow and further diversify the organization's 8 revenue streams, while working to raise the current year’s budget of $3.3 million. The Director will have the opportunity to further innovate how the organization fundraises, while strengthening its relationships with all of its donors and funders.
The Development Director will play a key role in the continued growth and expansion of True Colors United by managing all aspects of fundraising, including: donor acquisition and retention, major gifts, foundation giving, corporate giving, direct marketing, online auctions and raffles, and special events. The ideal candidate will be able to successfully manage day-to-day tasks related to fundraising and donor stewardship, while creating and overseeing management of a longer term development plan.Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director & CEO, the Development Director will:
- Create and implement an innovative and solid annual fundraising strategy, as well as a long term plan to further grow and diversify the organization's 8 revenue streams (including international support) over the next 2-3 years.
- Enhance the organization's stewardship program for existing donors to ensure strong enduring relationships and an ongoing awareness of the impact of their support.
- Expand the organization’s prospecting efforts to identify new funders, including major donors, foundations, and corporations.
- Ensure that fundraising and stewardship efforts are conducted through a racial equity lens
- Grow the organization’s individual donor base, including monthly donors, and manage annual giving campaigns.
- Strengthen the organization’s major gifts program, the Prism Society, and serve as a relationship manager for this growing donor base.
- Act as a primary liaison to the organization's national corporate partners and further develop the program’s reach and impact.
- Supervise and work with the Grants and Database Officer to grow the foundation giving program, serve as a liaison to funders, and provide guidance and feedback on grant proposals and reports.
- Implement and develop innovative “out of the box” approaches to fundraising and build off the success of the organization's original revenue stream, semi-annual online auctions
- Partner with the organization's Board of Directors and Executive Director & CEO to support their fundraising efforts.
- Post-pandemic, identify and manage fundraising events ranging from smaller local events to large-scale national events.
- Partner with and support the Communications team in building and executing a marketing plan for the organization.
- Oversee a strong and consistent acknowledgement system to ensure that donors are recognized in a timely manner for their support.
- Ensure accuracy in donor records and, in partnership with the organization's accountant, accurate reporting of all income.
- At least 7-10 years of nonprofit fundraising/development experience, preferably with significant major gifts, corporate, foundation fundraising experience.
- Proven track record of achieving revenue targets of over $2 million annually.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate and steward new and existing donors and funders, as well as a proven commitment to relationship-focused fundraising principles.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and thorough understanding of growing a diversified funding base.
- Strong partnership-building and event planning skills.
- Proven project management and leadership experience.
- Familiarity with LGBTQ+ and racial equity issues and principles.
- Self-motivated, possess a high degree of initiative, work well under pressure and be able to handle several projects at once.
- Be able to think “outside the box” and be comfortable in a fast paced environment.
- Strong verbal communications skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively.
- Good computer skills and knowledge of database programs, ideally Salesforce.
- Ability to develop and manage budgets and prepare financial reports.

During the pandemic, this position will be remote. Post-pandemic, it will likely be based out of True Colors United’s Washington, D.C. office, with the possibility of working in our New York City office. Candidates outside of NY and DC are still encouraged to apply, as the organization is exploring the possibility of post-pandemic remote work.
