Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is the national umbrella organization for the nation’s leading network of women’s health care providers, educators, and advocates, serving women, men, teens and families. Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) is the advocacy and political arm of PPFA. For over 100 years, Planned Parenthood has done more than any other organization in the United States to improve women’s health and safety, prevent unintended pregnancies, and advance the right and ability of individuals and families to make informed and responsible health care decisions.     Planned Parenthood seeks an Associate Director for Trusts & Estates, reporting to the Director of Gift Planning--Gifts & Systems in the Development Division of PPFA. This individual will be part of an accomplished, national team charged with increasing and retaining planned gift commitments for PPFA, PPAF, and the organization’s Collaborative Fundraising Program. The Gift Planning team expands philanthropic revenue for Planned Parenthood by working with donors and their advisors on estate planning, life income gifts—including charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts, and a pooled income fund—and special ways of giving—including beneficiary designations, IRA giving, and endowments.  Purpose:
  • The purpose of the Associate Director for Trusts & Estates is to add value and expertise to the growing and successful estates-in-probate program of the national organization and our affiliate partners in the collaborative fundraising program. This new staff member will work with the existing team to triage estate matters, monitor litigation, flag court deadlines, secure local representation, review open estates, track long delayed trusts, and maintain accurate financial tracking and forecasts.
Delivery:

  • Reviews assigned estates-in-probate, identifying any concerning circumstances including significant delays by executors, potential litigation, inadequate assets, disputes between legatees, pressure to add restrictions and obligations, and other situations.
  • Strategizes on next steps with the team, Director, and Vice President.
  • Researches and identifies prospective sources when outside counsel is needed.
  • Contacts peers at co-named charitable beneficiaries to compare information and develop strategies to bring estate distributions to completion.
  • Ensures that the organization acts with timely and formal responses to protect the interests of Planned Parenthood.
  • Compiles estate summaries, family trees, real estate data, and other information when needed.
  • Works to increase the annual number of realized estates and obtain the documents and information needed to estimate and record future revenue.
  • Manages a portfolio of estates to be assigned including the long-delayed trusts and estates, monitoring the status of various contingencies.
  • Manages the estates-in-probate that include bequests for the PP Action Fund.
  • Reviews unusual assets designated for Planned Parenthood in the estate plans of donors. Interfaces internally and externally so that Planned Parenthood receives timely and unnumbered requests.
  • Builds expertise in the donor database through training; updates information in the database as assigned.
  • Additional responsibilities to be assigned throughout the year.
Engagement:
  • The incumbent will regularly interact internally with the Director of Gift Planning -Gifts & Systems, the Specialist for Estates, the Estates Officer, and the Office of the General Counsel staff. The incumbent will regularly interact externally with lawyers working on behalf of Planned Parenthood, law offices representing estates, families and contacts of decedents, and affiliate staff.
