We seek an experienced, strategic, innovative Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our senior leadership team. Reporting directly to the CEO, this position will oversee all financial and administrative functions that support the sustainability and growth of this dynamic organization.

Summary:  LightHawk, a 41- year old international, Colorado-based nonprofit, seeks a dynamic and innovative leader to join our senior leadership team as Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Reporting directly to the CEO, this position will oversee all financial and administrative functions that support the sustainability and growth of this dynamic organization.

The CFO will play a critical role in the efficient and effective management of the overall organization while supporting and advancing the organization’s strategic growth. The successful candidate will be responsible for budgeting and finance, human resources, and general operations while also setting the stage for planned growth in both revenue and FTE count.

Serving as a strategic partner to the CEO, the CFO will support forward-looking financial analysis and projections to facilitate strategic decision-making as LightHawk evolves its business model and continues on its sustainable growth trajectory. The CFO will provide day-to-day oversight for the fiscal direction of the organization and create an environment that ensures the organization functions at peak efficiency.  The preferred candidate would ideally have expertise in nonprofit management.

The CFO will join an agile, energetic, collaborative, and established leadership team consisting of a Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) and Chief Program Officer (CPO) committed to strategically positioning LightHawk as a forward-looking partner in the aviation conservation arena across North America and beyond.

The CFO will translate this mission-driven passion into sustainable fiscal relationships that support our volunteers, donors, staff and partners. LightHawk’s revenue source is generated from grants and institutional donors. The CFO supervises department strategy and monetary growth and collaborates with other management. The CFO works to establish and execute strategic goals to advance LightHawk’s mission.

POSITION PROFILE

As the CFO, the successful candidate will strengthen LightHawk’s Lead Team and play a critical role in our future success. The CFO will help lead a staff that currently includes one part-time staff and some contractors. Responsibilities are far-ranging and primarily include:

  • Fiscal Management, including internal controls, accounting, budgeting, forecasting and analysis.
  • Federal and State compliance in employment, corporate, HR, and financial realms.
  • Risk Assessment and Organizational Liability Insurance
  • Human Resources and Benefit Administration
  • Board relations
  • General Office Administration

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

Competitive candidates will possess:

  • Ten years’ experience of direct financial management and accounting experience required with significant experience in non-profit sector
  • Experience managing personnel, compensation, and benefit systems.
  • Ability to work with and as part of a team of highly motivated colleagues and peers. Team collaboration is very important to our culture.
  • Ability to work in deadline-driven situations.
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to make decisions quickly while ensuring all relevant team members are included in the decision-making process.
  • Ability to look at the big picture and be a thought partner who can recognize when a project is at risk of going off-track for time or budget.
  • Consistent access to high-speed internet for video conferencing
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous nonprofit organization business model experience is preferred.
  • Experience reporting to and engaging with a board of directors
  • Inclusive staff management experience
  • Experience managing contractors
  • Bachelor’s degree required (MBA, CPA, and/or equivalent certification and/or experience preferred).

 COMPENSATION

  • Salary range is $70,000 - $80,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Comprehensive benefits program, including medical, dental, vision, 401K, technology stipends, and paid time off annually.

Work Environment: 

This full-time position with benefits is currently home office based with phone, internet and small equipment stipends provided. LightHawk will migrate back to a traditional, office-based workspace post-pandemic.   If a suitable home office is not available, LightHawk will provide an office space.

Benefits and salary are commensurate with nonprofit industry standards and include flexible schedules and generous paid leave.

Travel and Work hours

(Post pandemic) requires travel of about 3-4, 3-4 days trips per year. This exempt position may require occasional nights and weekends in addition to regular work hours.
