Departmental Overview

University and Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduates and graduate students, and friends of the university, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus's philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen development with campus fundraisers.

Annual Programs is a division of UDAR and is the campus-wide fundraising office that reached out to donors and volunteers for support. Our mission is to maximize annual and major gift donations from alumni, students, parents, and friends in support of Berkeley. Three divisions make up Annual Programs: Parent Philanthropy and Engagement, Pipeline and Leadership Annual Giving, and Donor Relationship Management.

Responsibilities

The University of California, Berkeley, Office of Parent Philanthropy and Engagement, seeks an energetic and experienced fundraiser to solicit philanthropic gifts from current Cal parents supporting key cross-divisional programs that impact student experience services across the UC Berkeley campus. The Assistant Director of Development is the philanthropic content leader in areas impacting student experience and success and parent interests and philanthropy.

This position will help build and realize the full potential of parent fundraising and engagement in the State of California, with an emphasis on the LA Metro and Orange County areas.

The Assistant Director, Parent Philanthropy and Engagement, will share responsibility for the fundraising endeavors of the office along with one other major gift officer and the Director; this position reports directly to the Director. This role will involve designing, developing, delivering, and administering fundraising programs to grow our parent philanthropic initiatives in the LA Metro region. This position will not only identify new donor prospects through researching background information on potential parent-donors, but will spend approximately 40-50% of travel time to visit, cultivate and solicit parent-donors.

This position will be a respected team player, part of a six-person staff in Parent Philanthropy and Engagement, which reports to Annual Programs within UDAR (University Development and Alumni Relations) at the campus level.

Responsibilities:

Proactively manage a portfolio of 75 -100 individual major gift prospects, who have the capacity to give between $100,000 and $250,000. Make at least 10-12 in-person visits per month plus substantive contacts to advance the donor relationship. Qualify major gift prospects and solicit gifts directly. Ensure that predetermined fundraising goals are met. Uses Prospect Management liaison to actively identify and add/subtract parent-prospects from portfolio on an ongoing basis.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Identifies, cultivates, solicits and/or stewards donors.
  • Manages a portfolio of 100-125 major gift prospects who have the capacity to give $100K or more over a four year period.
  • Ensure that predetermined fundraising goals are met and raise funds in the high six figures once established with an appropriate portfolio.
  • Maintain a schedule conducive to regular overnight travel to the LA metro region and Orange County to qualify, cultivate and solicit parent donors.
  • Coordinate cultivation and solicitation activities as primary manager for numerous parent-prospects with multiple interests across campus. Work collaboratively with other unit fundraisers to create strategies for parent-prospects with unit-specific interests.
  • Participates in short and long-range strategic planning for the Parent Philanthropy and Engagement Office in collaboration with other staff members and the Director.

Required Qualifications

  • Thorough working knowledge and understanding of fundraising and donor relations concepts, principles, techniques, procedures and practices.

  • Thorough written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to build and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.

  • Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution.

  • Thorough project management skills.

  • Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.

  • Bachelor's degree and minimum three years' experience in annual fund or major gift fundraising or related experience.

  • Travel and overnight stays are expected as well as some evening and weekend work.

    Other Information

    This position requires frequent travel to the LA Metro area and Orange County. In response to COVID-19, UC Berkeley staff are temporarily working remotely. When the UC Berkeley "Future of Work" guidelines are determined, the required work location will be on campus in Berkeley, or reside in the LA Metro area or Orange County.
