Created in 1948, IUCN has evolved into the world’s largest and
most diverse environmental network. It harnesses the experience,
resources and reach of its 1,400 Member organisations and the input
of some 16,000 experts. IUCN is the global authority on the status
of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it. Our
experts are organised into six commissions dedicated to species
survival, environmental law, protected areas, social and economic
policy, ecosystem management, and education and
communication.
This is an exciting new opportunity for an experienced and
ambitious fundraiser to join IUCN’s Strategic Partnerships team.
The Manager, Philanthropy will support the implementation of IUCN’s
resource mobilization strategy with a view to growing and
diversifying revenue streams through the development of strategic
engagements with influential and high profile individuals, grant
making foundations and trusts and in the USA. The position will
report to the Director, Strategic Partnerships and work closely
with the Executive Director, IUCN Washington and the Manager,
Private Philanthropy based at IUCN Headquarters in
Switzerland.
As a member of the Strategic Partnerships Unit, and in coordination
with the Director of the North American Office, the Manager will
develop and oversee a program to maximise support from these
funding streams.
JOB DESCRIPTION Specific duties and deliverables:
•Coordinate individual giving and major donor fundraising efforts in the USA.
•Develop and execute a medium-term fundraising plan for major donors and strategic engagement with US based foundations that contribute to the delivery of IUCN’s program and institutional priorities
•Build and manage a robust donor portfolio and prospect pipeline focusing on philanthropic partners
•Identify new major donor prospects and develop and implement cultivation strategies for supporting IUCN
•Ensure high retention of major donors and increase in giving levels
•Coordinate fundraising campaigns and regular communications with donors
•Generate opportunities for high level meetings with new donors, outreach events, participation in conferences and networking events
•Ensure coordination with Grants Management Unit and Finance in preparation of proposals and reports to donors
•Prepare strategy and briefing documents for meetings with major donors, cultivation events, and manage follow-up activities to secure major gifts
•Coordinate with and report regularly to the Board (IUCN US), soliciting their strategic inputs and supporting their contributions to organizational fundraising
•Develop and implement systems and processes to improve fundraising efficiency and effectiveness related to major donors in the USA. REQUIREMENTS • At least eight years work experience as a professional fundraiser, preferably for environmental, social or climate justice organizations.
• A knowledge of and a passion for environment, conservation, sustainable development
• A proven track-record of effectively soliciting and securing large gifts.
• Demonstrated leadership in designing, managing and implementing a full suite of development efforts, including experience in major gifts, planned giving and donor relationship management.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment across multiple programmes and regions.
• Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written.
• International orientation and passion for global work. Experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, strategic thinking, commitment to results, attention to detail, and solutions oriented.
• Willingness to travel within the US and occasionally internationally. APPLICATIONS
