Director of Alumni Relations

 

Position Summary:

The Director of Alumni Relations will lead the overall vision, strategic planning, management, and execution of an alumni engagement program focused on developing and strengthening short and long-term meaningful relations with alumni. The Director will be responsible for implementing both a creative and systematic approach of alumni engagement, both in-person and online, and in both content and delivery of programming.

The Director of Alumni Relations will report to the Advancement Director and collaborate with Advancement colleagues, the Communications Team, faculty, and other key internal and external partners to contribute to the success of the school and program.

Key activities under the direction of the Office of Alumni Relations include overseeing Reunion Weekend, steering the Alumni Council and other volunteer leaders, directing ad hoc events and engagement opportunities, and alumni communications. The successful candidate will be a strategic and innovative leader who has a demonstrated understanding of and interest in communications, and an enthusiasm for inspiring a culture of engagement.

 

Responsibilities:

Oversee Alumni Relations program, including evaluating current efforts, and spearheading future programming and communications directed at alumni engagement, in alignment with alumni interests and goals of the school.

  • Play a leadership role fostering collaborations between alumni and internal partners to optimize alumni engagement with the school.
    • Encourage alumni engagement as volunteers and as contributors to the school and seek ways to leverage opportunities for the school’s graduates through the alumni network.
    • Build connections between the students and alumni and facilitate pathways for meaningful alumni participation, including as presenters, mentors, and connectors.
    • Create programming and identify opportunities to interact with Upper School students to develop their role as future alumni, including coordinating senior messaging and events.
    • Support programming for diversity, equity, and inclusion work with affinity spaces.

 

  • Lead oversight of the Alumni Council, working closely with the council president.
    • Help identify opportunities for engagement between the Council and the overall community.
    • Serve as the liaison between the Council and faculty/staff.
    • Work with Council president to manage short-term and long-term goals of the group.

 

  • Responsible for overall event plans and implementation for all in-person and virtual alumni gatherings, including (but not limited to):
    • Reunion Weekend, the school’s biggest alumni event of the year.
    • Managing Athletic Hall of Fame Committee including nomination process and ceremony.
    • Regional and local alumni events.
    • Alumni campus visits.
    • Welcoming the Senior Class into the GSB Alumni Association with the support of the Alumni Council and special events.

 

  • Drive alumni communication and outreach efforts for multiple digital and print channels, including:
    • Manage the GSB Alumni Connect online networking and mentoring platform hosted by Graduway.
    • Support GSB Alumni Magazine production with writing and editing assignments.
    • Manage, create, and distribute content on alumni Facebook platform.

 

  • Support the Associate Director of Advancement in cultivating a philanthropic culture among all alumni and the Senior Class, including:
    • Identify and recruit key alumni to be featured in events, serve as volunteers, and support fundraising efforts.
    • Partner with Associate Director of Advancement to build strategies to best solicit gifts from alumni in conjunction with the GSB Fund and Reunion Giving.
    • Recruit alumni to serve as volunteer solicitors for the GSB Fund.
    • Coordinate the Senior Gift process.

 

  • Contributes to the overall success of the Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations by working on special projects, events, and performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Advancement Director.

 

Qualifications:

This position requires a bachelor’s degree with a minimum five (5) years’ experience in alumni relations or transferable experience with a background in fundraising. This position also requires demonstrated success in:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Highly organized with demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, and deadlines.
  • Mature judgment, tact, sensitivity, and discretion.
  • Professional, organized, creative and efficient.
  • Experience in planning events and managing volunteers.
  • Experience with social media and other communications channels.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.
  • Independent school experience a plus.
  • Background in fundraising experience a plus.
  • Raiser’s Edge experience a plus.
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours required.
  • Occasional out of state travel is required.
