ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Associate Director, Global Individual Philanthropy plays a critical role in the fundraising and execution of resource mobilization strategies for a defined donor and prospect portfolio of between 100-125 high net-worth individuals based around the world. The Associate Director will exercise independent judgment in the development and execution of customized and discrete strategies for prospecting, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of clients in a defined portfolio. The ideal candidate will be an ambitious fundraiser and bring an entrepreneurial spirit and high level of professionalism to Development’s resource mobilization team. 

This role will also supervise the Development Coordinator.

The Associate Director, Global Individual Philanthropy will be based in our Washington, DC office, and report to the Senior Director of Development.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:

Portfolio Management:

  • Be directly responsible for fundraising from high net-worth individuals based around the world for meeting specific fundraising targets annually.
  • Develop and execute customized strategies for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of each donor and viable prospect in the portfolio with the ultimate goal of securing unrestricted, core-support (or in some cases thematically restricted support) gifts and multi-year gift commitments.
  • Maintain a “Top 25” pool of prospective major gift donors who will be solicited in the next 12-18 month period.
  • Work to an agreed upon target of strategic cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship contacts per month to prospective donors that move the potential donor toward major gift commitment.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Development (SDD) to ensure strategic and strong management of a specific portfolio of donors and identified prospects.
  • Identify and lead on the development and cultivation of viable prospects to maintain a diversified and robust pipeline of opportunities.
  • Project manage the preparation, submission and overall process of solicitations, including working across teams to compile appropriate narrative and content for the creation of compelling solicitation materials; and ensure that all solicitation materials have an appropriate narrative, tone, consistent voice, and demonstrate an understanding of the donor’s/prospect’s interests and intent.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with ONE staff, leadership, and other stakeholders who are deployed as staff stewards, volunteer stewards or primary solicitors in client relationships.
  • Monitor progress in achieving revenue goals; provide monthly and ad-hoc progress reports tracking all moves management work in Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT.
  • Ensure the highest level of record-keeping on all gifts and grants made by clients; clearly sharing that documentation and donor-intent with colleagues as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with teams across the organization to ensure grant and gift agreements are clearly assigned and in progress, and that impact measurements and evaluation expectations are being adequately tracked.
  • Represent the Development team at external meetings to progress prospecting opportunities and build our network.

Other Responsibilities: 

  • Supervise the Development Coordinator, including their regular workflow, projects etc. as well as overseeing their ongoing professional development at ONE.
  • Collaborate with the CDO and SDD on the overall Individual development strategy.
  • Act as a Deputy to the SDD and where necessary the CDO.
  • Execute cross-team responsibilities, particularly as related to individual clients and as assigned.
  • Support preparation, execution and follow-up from schedule of relevant donor events and prospecting opportunities, as needed.
  • Oversee delivery of quality research on the global individual market and philanthropic trends, including through networking.
  • Represent the Development team at external meetings to progress prospecting opportunities and build our network.
  • Proactively identify, implement and champion standard methodologies and professionalization of processes to enhance the Development Team’s work and prospecting.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:

  • Bachelors Degree; Masters Degree preferred
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in fundraising, including core areas like individual major gift solicitation, grant management, proposal writing, and donor stewardship
  • Significant experience in securing principal gifts from individuals, and demonstrated success in closing gifts of $1M+.
  • Demonstrates specialized depth and breadth of expertise in business development for an international NGO, especially with support from individuals and/or foundations
  • Proven track record of developing and maintaining positive relationships with volunteers, board members, committees, corporate executives, foundation representatives, and current and prospective donors
  • Experience in successfully supervising staff.
  • Success in this position requires a person who is a self-starter and has the ability to work independently and has outstanding professional integrity and confidence
  • Critical thinking, communication, writing/editing, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to manage multiple, shifting priorities under tight deadlines while performing in a fast-paced, collaborative environment 
  • Related work history in poverty and infectious disease alleviation, advocacy, policy, legislation and/or demonstrable interest in the causes ONE supports 
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite and able to navigate donor portals. Familiarity with CRM software desirable.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Fluency in English required.  Proficiency in other languages preferred such as French and German.

TRAVEL

Travel up to 25% domestic and international.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Remote work environment at the time of hire. In-office work options available and standard office work environment in the future when deemed appropriate.
