Smile Train is an international not-for-profit organization headquartered in New York, whose vision is to transform the life of every person impacted by cleft lip and palate. Smile Train supports and trains doctors and medical professionals to provide free life-changing comprehensive cleft treatment to children in need. To date, Smile Train’s sustainable model, “teach a man to fish,” has allowed the organization to support 1.5+ million cleft surgeries around the world.

Smile Train seeks an inaugural Senior Vice President, Communications (SVP). The SVP will design and implement a strategic and operational plan for building and managing a comprehensive global communications strategy.

As the fulcrum of Smile Train’s communications strategy, the SVP will provide leadership and direction to strengthen and expand the brand reach and communications globally. They will define, shape and iterate on strategic communications initiatives to engage Smile Train’s key audiences. The successful candidate will build, bridge, and manage a comprehensive global communications strategy across Smile Train’s four key audiences: supporter audience (ambassadors, advocates, donors, and prospects), programs audience (medical partners, institutions, patients and families, government, and multilateral organizations), global audiences, and internal staff.

The SVP will reimagine how Smile Train thinks and talks about our global work, and the life-changing impact this important work has on patients, families, and communities. They will amplify the excellent work that Smile Train does every day and be charged with creating harmony between strategic communications, organizational impact, media and brand, and internal messaging to create a cohesive voice for Smile Train.

A successful SVP will design and roll out the structures and systems necessary to build a communications program that allows the organization to thoughtfully, strategically, and adeptly articulate the Smile Train story. They will bring an innovative and comprehensive global approach to branding, communications, and advocacy, and have the stature and demonstrated ability to effectively build relationships and alliances with constituencies, both internally and externally.

Reporting to the President & CEO, the SVP will oversee a growing Communications department comprised of ten professionals with specializations in advocacy, PR and social, brand communications, content, creative and video/graphic design. This is an exciting opportunity to lead, direct, design and create a cohesive team and communications vision to bolster Smile Train’s reputation and influence. A successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues around the globe to procure content and provide a strategic approach to communications for Smile Train’s partners around the globe.
