Assistant Director of Development, Cultural Affairs  

The ASU Foundation, one of five nonprofit entities that make up ASU Enterprise Partners, is seeking an Assistant Director of Development, Cultural Affairs who is a core member of the Cultural Affairs development team.

 

ASU Cultural Affairs is comprised of three units; ASU Gammage, ASU Kerr and ASU 365 Community Union.

 

ASU Gammage is among the largest university-based presenters of performing arts in the world, bringing the best of Broadway, contemporary theater, music and dance to its 3,000 seat historic hall designed by internationally renowned architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. Its mission is Connecting Communities™ through artistic excellence and educational outreach.

 

ASU Kerr is an intimate historic venue that presents a diverse mix of live music, storytelling and theater. World music, indie folk, jazz, soul, baroque pop and more grace its stage each season.

 

ASU 365 Community Union goes beyond the traditional model of a university football stadium, turning it into a public asset that is utilized 365 days a year. It is a hub where people can converge on campus to enjoy programming designed for the entire community, with food service and activities that will enthrall audiences of all ages. 

 

To support the university’s arts initiatives, the ASU Foundation for A New American University is seeking an assistant director of development who will join a team of experienced development professionals to secure significant philanthropic investments for cultural affairs initiatives at ASU. As an externally focused development professional, the assistant director’s effectiveness will be evaluated on the ability to achieve financial goals and contact metrics consistent with the programs and prospects assigned. The assistant director reports to the foundation’s senior director of development for Cultural Affairs.

 

What you’ll do:

 

  • Work with development colleagues, volunteers, academic and non-academic leaders to identify, cultivate and solicit annual, major and planned gifts
  • Develop and submit written proposals, budgets, and other collateral materials as needed for securing philanthropic investments
  • Proactively build and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects locally, regionally and nationally, developing and executing strategies leading to solicitation and investment that leverage the donor’s interests and connect them to ASU’s opportunities
  • Plan virtual and in-person events to help build a robust prospect pipeline and steward current donors
  • Use the ASUF prospect management and tracking system (Salesforce) to record and coordinate prospect engagement and proposals
  • Be responsible for core fundraising metrics including high impact engagements with prospects, entry and major gift proposals submitted, and dollars raised
  • Ensure proper stewardship and recognition of donors in portfolio
  • Develop a strong working relationship with key staff members of Cultural Affairs  
  • Assist with all aspects of development, including the creation of development plans, budgets, communications and short and long-range strategic planning
  • Participate, as a member of the ASUF development team and serve as a resource to development colleagues across ASU regarding fundraising opportunities
  • Work in a fast-paced, results oriented environment with complex and evolving relationships and priorities
  • Other duties as assigned

 

What you’ll need:

 

  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of development/fundraising
  • Strong and collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and by phone
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and University business and confidential prospect information
  • Self-starter able to secure personal appointments and qualify new prospects 
  • Demonstrated success in personally securing major philanthropic investments by implementing sophisticated, multi-year cultivation strategies that use a relationship-building and moves management approach leading to successful portfolio management and gift closure
  • Demonstrable experience in stewardship plans leading to additional investments 
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to travel nationally when necessary to engage and solicit major prospects
  • Problem solver who can take initiative and set priorities while being flexible 
  • Team-oriented strategist able to effectively manage complex situations involving numerous and sometimes competing constituencies
  • Ability to represent the institution well with a diversity of stakeholders
  • Belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University
  • Ability to prepare complex and detailed proposals and related materials
  • Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in donor/prospect computer data base systems
  • Collaborative style, combined with the ability and desire to work in a team-based environment
  • Adept at navigating complex environments with evolving priorities and communication plans 

 

Relevant qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years successful professional development and/or fundraising related experience, OR, any equivalent combinations of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been achieved.

Working conditions:

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions. This position will require some early mornings and evenings to accommodate meetings and events. 

 

Working equipment:

This position will require a tablet computer, telephone, mobile communication device ($60 monthly reimbursement), corporate card, university club membership and business cards.
