Executive Director (Healthcare Nonprofit, Fully Remote)

PNP is excited to have been retained by the National Blood Clot Alliance to lead their search for a new Executive Director.


The National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) seeks an experienced, high-energy leader with excellent proven fundraising, communications, and management skills. NBCA is a patient-led voluntary health advocacy organization dedicated to advancing the prevention, early diagnosis, and successful treatment of life-threatening blood clots – the often-unrecognized cause of death in strokes, heart attacks, cancer and childbirth. For the past 18 years, NBCA has created and carried out programs that build public awareness, educate patients and healthcare professionals on the signs, symptoms and prevention of blood clots and clotting disorders, and promote supportive public and private sector policy. NBCA combines the unique perspectives of healthcare providers, individuals afflicted with clotting disorders and community leaders. 

Reporting to and working with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides direction and leadership for the organization’s mission and vision, represents and speaks for the organization and its work, and manages day-to-day operations to achieve the strategic direction set by the Board. The ED is responsible for both internal and external relationships, including creating a positive work culture and philosophy; maximizing the use of available personnel and resources; and establishing, maintaining, and updating operational procedures. 


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working with the Board to implement policy and operational guidelines to achieve the goals of the organization
  • Provide visionary leadership for the organization, along with strategic thinking to translate that vision into action;
  • Develop programs and services in alignment with the strategic plan. Monitor programs and services to ensure quality and timeliness, compliance with criteria established by funding sources, and consistency with the mission and goals of the organization;
  • Maintain an effective budget process and a complete understanding of the organization’s financial position and outlook, and ensure fiscal responsibility and security;
  • Maintain and grow current funding streams and identify and implement new fundraising strategies. Identify, prioritize, and provide advice and counsel to aid the Board in assessing potential fundraising alternatives. Build on relationships with funding sources and prepare funding proposals; and develop and nurture funding sources beyond those traditionally relied on by the organization. 
  • Represent NBCA to various audiences and maintain sound relationships with partner organizations, funders and supporters. Initiate and develop relationships with other groups involved directly or indirectly with the organization’s mission and goals, including (but not limited to) provider, clinician, and academic groups, other non-profits, and potential funders. Undertake activities that enhance the visibility of the organization (e.g., conferences, collaborative projects).
  • Develop and maintain an active and effective public communications program, including web-based information and training and social media.
  • Support the Board in its governance role and foster its ongoing development; keep the Board fully informed (on a timely basis) of internal conditions, significant issues, and important external developments affecting the development and delivery of programs and services;
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and ensure that NBCA maintains its status as a well-managed, highly respected organization;
  • Oversee the work of the staff, set work priorities, and maintain a positive work environment.


The priority responsibilities of the new ED for the first 12 months will be to:

  • Gain a quick and thorough understanding of the organization and its business model, systems, and culture and the roles and responsibilities of staff members;
  • Develop trust and excellent working relationships with all stakeholders, including the Board, staff, advisors, and funders;
  • Create and develop an implementation plan for the recently approved strategic plan, including procedures to monitor, evaluate, and update the strategic plan; and, with the Board’s advice and assistance as appropriate, carry out that plan.
  • Create and implement a fundraising plan and structure, including identifying and securing new funding, with a special emphasis on diversifying funding sources;


Critical Skills and Experience

  • Ideal candidates for this position will share our commitment to NBCA’s mission and will bring a variety of experiences and attributes to NBCA, including:
  • Successful leadership experience in a non-profit organization, (experience in healthcare organizations and missions that support women’s health a plus) including at least five years’ professional experience of progressive leadership and management responsibility; Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s or other relevant advanced degree is preferred
  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles as they relate to non-profit/voluntary organizations;
  • Experience in, and knowledge of, the fields of healthcare and health policy; understanding of national health policy issues, their interaction, and their socioeconomic and political environment;
  • Proven successful experience with non-profit fiscal management, budgeting, and operations, including responsibility for developing and managing a programmatic budget;
  • A successful track record in fundraising and developing relationships with funders and the ability to identify new revenue streams; experience in grant writing or supervision preferred;
  • Proven networking ability, exceptional interpersonal skills, development and understanding of complex relationships, and the ability to engage a diverse group of stakeholders;
  • A keen understanding of the use of technology in modern-day non-profit work; both from an operational/cost saving/productivity standpoint but also to be used to enhance fundraising capabilities
  • Ability to provide visionary and strategic leadership and translate that vision into measurable strategies and concrete actions that advance the mission;
  • Well-developed written and oral communications skills and style;
  • Skill as a facilitator leading and mediating conversations with disparate groups;
  • Proven project management skills;
  • Well-honed leadership skills and style, including diplomatic assertiveness, credibility, integrity, flexibility, courage, curiosity, and a positive affect;
  • Familiarity with federal legislation applicable to nonprofit organizations including, but not limited to, employment standards, human rights, charities, taxation;
  • Proven experience and understanding of the use of web-based and social media tools for educational, awareness, and fundraising purposes;
  • Proven skill in management with the ability to oversee organizational workload planning and management, the capacity to delegate, and a focus on creating a team atmosphere; and
  • Successful experience supporting a board of directors in its governance role, fostering its ongoing development, and keeping it informed about internal conditions and external developments.
