Since its start in 2014, StrongMinds has treated over 80,000 women with depression in Uganda and Zambia. We are the only organization scaling a solution to depression in Africa with a potential to serve millions of people in the next ten years.

Position Description: Development Officer for Institutional Giving
The Development Officer for Institutional Giving is primarily responsible for grant writing and for prospecting and growing StrongMinds’ portfolio of institutional partners. Responsibilities include researching funding prospects and working in close collaboration with the Grants Manager on preparing concept notes and proposals. This individual works closely with the Director of Development and Communications to devise and implement strategic approaches to secure new relationships with institutional donors and to achieve and exceed fundraising income targets. This position reports to the Director of Development and Communications.


Research new funding sources:

  • Proactively conduct and update foundation prospect research to support organizational goals, including identifying and recommending new potential foundation and other funding prospects.
  • Maintain prospects database and robust pipelines of new potential funders.
  • Prepare briefing memos and other informational materials that aid the organization’s management team donor engagement.
  • Prospect and support corporate and bi-lateral funding sources.


Proposals and Reports:

  • Write both grant proposals and reports, collaborating across teams to collect and include relevant inputs and data.
  • Conduct and coordinate the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundations within their submission/reporting deadlines.
  • Gather all relevant components of proposals and ensure that proposal submissions comply with the requirements of each funder, working across a broad range of donors and award amounts.
  • Assist the Director of Development and Communications with the initiation of new development activities.
  • Support grant management activities, including documenting and communicating reporting requirements to ensure compliance with all grant reporting and receipting as required by donors.
  • Support the Development Department in establishing and executing processes needed to ensure all routine and necessary contact, cultivation and follow-up are accomplished in a timely manner, including tracking and recording engagement with new and existing institutional donors and coordinating follow up as needed.
  • Assist with joint proposals and reports in support of partnership grants.


Information Tracking and Coordination:

  • Maintain institutional donor information in the donor database including meeting notes, correspondence with donor staff, grant tracking and reporting, receipting, submission calendar, and revenue reports.
  • Generate well synthesized progress reports.
  • Provide support as needed to Director of Development and Communications



  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with grant writing and the grants process.
  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals.
  • Experience with institutional donors.
  • A clear understanding of StrongMinds’ mission and ability to convey strategy.
  • Strong editing skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Self-starter and ability to meet deadlines independently of outside reminders.
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research.
  • Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies.
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to maintain well-documented records.
  • Experience working in a deadline-driven and fast-paced environment.
  • Able to work well independently while handling multiple assignments and priorities while meeting multiple deadlines.
