As Penn State continues a record-setting campaign, A Greater Penn State for 21st Century Excellence, an Executive Director of Health System Development is needed to support the Division of Development and Alumni Relations at Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine. Reporting to the Associate Vice President and Chief Development Officer at Penn State Health and College of Medicine and working closely with Penn State Health leadership, as well as other partners, this role will:
- Oversee the strategic and operational management of development
activities related to Penn State Health (PSH) and its community
hospitals
- Provide leadership and day-to-day management for the Directors
of Development of the community hospitals, Penn State Health
Children's Miracle Network (CMN) team, and Community/Third-Party
Fundraising including oversight of donor engagement and
solicitations in all of the areas
- Articulate Penn State's needs, ambitions, and values, including
diversity, equity, and inclusion, through excellent informal and
formal communications
- Recruit and guide diversely representative volunteer committees
charged with meaningful roles and responsibilities in the
fundraising process
- Define goals for future fundraising performance and decide on
the tasks and use of resources needed to attain them
- Communicate those goals and use influence to motivate employees
to achieve them through example and action
- Ensure operational and strategic direction and accountability;
link unit operations to strategic PSH objectives and influence
organizational and community relations to develop and achieve
strategic goals in philanthropy
- Serve as the direct liaison to the Penn State Health Milton S.
HersheyMedical Center President and as a senior member of the PSH
and College of Medicine (COM) Development and Alumni Relations
team, working closely with the Chief Development
Officer/AVP
- Personally manage and staff a portfolio of key major gift level
donors and prospects; maintaining frequent contact with these
constituents while engaging institutional leadership
- Meet gift officer metrics such as number of solicitations,
dollars raised, number of visits, number of assessment visits,
etc.
- Work closely and strategically with development colleagues at
PSH, COM and University Park to achieve team and individual
fundraising goals
- Work closely with the Executive Director of Academic Medicine
Development to align the academic and clinical fundraising
priorities across the health system and COM
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of the use of protected
health information in fundraising and provide guidance in this area
to fundraising and clinical staff at the hospitals when engaging
patient donors
This position will be filled as a level 2 or 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. This position would typically require 7+ years related experience, Bachelor's Degree or higher (Master's Degree preferred), or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. The successful candidate will also have: - Experience establishing a shared vision, ensuring team goals
are achieved, and providing direction for appropriate
implementation of plans; presenting ideas, concepts and
instructions in a clear manner; using persuasion and negotiation to
build consensus and cooperation; and developing new techniques,
concepts, theories, programs or solutions and apply them to complex
strategic operating issues to achieve financial goals
- Demonstrated proficiency in strategy development, project
management, financial planning and development of goals for
accomplishing unit goals
- Dedication to and understanding of the skills required to build
relationships with diverse communities
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and
inclusion
- Awareness of and adaptive actions to emerging trends within
development and medical fundraising, ensuring that organizational
practices remain current and effective
- Ability to review completed work of others for conformity to
policy, and effectiveness of approach; delegate more advanced tasks
to others; facilitate optimal group dynamics and evaluate employee
performance on difficult work assignments; and recommend
appropriate developmental opportunities
- Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills
- Proven capability to self-motivate and work both independently
as well as part of a team
- Commitment to professional development, learning, and being
mentored
- Expertise in developing proposals and coordinating fundraising
efforts across multiple units (PSH, COM and University Development)
to eliminate duplication of efforts
- Knowledge of resources and professional development
opportunities for staff to expand subject matter expertise and
skills
- Record of success identifying, cultivating and soliciting major
donors, grateful patients and other individuals; developing
knowledge of donors' interests; and supporting the same for team
members
- Established and implemented successful strategies for
fundraising programs
- Experience assuring acknowledgment of gifts and timely
reporting of their use; ensuring proper publicity for donors
Operation of a motor vehicle as part of the position's duties and a valid driver's license are required. Successful completion of a motor vehicle records check, in addition to standard background checks, is also required, as well as the following: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
