The VP role is a wonderful opportunity for an exceptional fundraiser who thrives in an entrepreneurial environment and can build a 21st century development program for a growing and dynamic organization. A critical member of the senior leadership team, the VP will develop, implement and scale an efficient and effective strategic fundraising plan with a particular focus on building a successful, long-term individual giving program. They will be responsible for identifying, engaging, soliciting and stewarding a constituency that includes, individuals (major gift, mid-level and annual fund donors), foundations, corporations and grant-making organizations.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated both ability and success in sourcing funding opportunities and designing and executing strategies to develop donor relationships at various levels. As a highly visible face of the organization, and the primary donor liaison, the VP must have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Paramount to the role is the ability to learn, assimilate and understand the variety and diversity of SF Goodwill’s mission, programs, and business lines and to be able to communicate the case for support to different audiences.
Reporting to the President and CEO, the VP will work collaboratively to build a culture of philanthropy at SF Goodwill, educating colleagues and volunteers about fundraising best practices, working with leadership to identify fundraising priorities and developing engagement strategies to secure external funding to build and sustain SF Goodwill’s programs. The position will supervise five staff members with the opportunity to grow the department as the program matures.
- Build and lead a diversified development program to grow SF Goodwill’s revenues and donor base. Assess, build and manage key functional areas of the fundraising program, including institutional and individual (annual, major and planned giving) giving, donor recognition/stewardship, development operations, prospect research and events, etc.
- Evaluate and design the necessary infrastructure, appropriate systems and staffing to support and grow SF Goodwill’s development program and operations
- Develop and grow a major gifts program by building, over time, a prospect pipeline.
- Implement prospect research and cultivation/engagement programs, working closely with the CEO, board, community members and colleagues
- Build and strengthen SF Goodwill’s institutional giving program. Work with institutional giving staff and SF Goodwill leadership and colleagues to build long-term relationships with funders, in order to increase support from corporations and from independent, community and family foundations
- Collaborate and work closely with the CEO, board, and other leaders to plan strategies and staff volunteers for fundraising campaigns and initiatives. Prepare briefings and background reports for the CEO or board members on donors/prospects
- Work collaboratively with all program areas at SF Goodwill to advance fundraising goals
- Manage relevant aspects of grants management in partnership with the Mission Advancement and Finance Departments, including proposal development, preparing budgets, tracking and reporting/compliance
- Strengthen donor acquisition and annual giving programs. Ensure the production and fulfillment of annual direct mail and online appeals. Provide direction to annual fund staff and vendors as necessary
- Supervise the ongoing maintenance and upgrade of the SF Goodwill Salesforce donor/prospect database to ensure high integrity of data collection, prompt gift acknowledgements and accurate reports
- Collaborate with Marketing & Communications on all development communications and constituent outreach activities involving website management, e-mail communications and campaigns, social media and print collateral, case statements, proposals, etc.
- Continually evaluate internal fundraising strategies, policies, systems and procedures for efficiency and effectiveness for best practices. Ensure compliance with all relevant policies and regulations set forth by the IRS, Board, and President & CEO
- Build a culture of philanthropy internally and externally that will attract donors to the organization. Work in close partnership with SF Goodwill leadership and colleagues to build SF Goodwill’s philanthropic capabilities. Provide counsel, training and direction regarding fundraising
- Create and implement annual and longer-term (3-5 year) plans aligned with the strategic direction of the organization, including both monetary and activity goals
- Hire, manage and provide direction and mentorship to development staff/consultants
- Serve as an ambassador of SF Goodwill to donors, prospects and funders, involving colleagues as appropriate in outreach, cultivation and solicitation activities
- Assess the need for and manage the planning and execution of fundraising and cultivation events or other activities to attract and engage support
A Bachelor’s degree is required. Advanced degree and/or fundraising certification (CFRE) appreciated.
- A minimum of ten years of development experience with at least three years at a senior management level
- Proven skills in individual and institutional giving and a demonstrated track record of fundraising success
- Deep knowledge and experience in fundraising strategic planning and implementation
- Experience diversifying revenue streams and building/strengthening a development program
- Solid experience in individual gift fundraising, with a demonstrated ability to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors/prospects and effectively move them through the development cycle leading to major gifts
- Experience in institutional giving, proposal development and development operations
- Demonstrated ability to engage and support volunteers with their efforts in fundraising and donor and prospect engagement
- Proven ability to serve in the role of resource/coach/mentor to board members and colleagues; and in close partnership with the CEO to build the board’s capabilities in fundraising, consultation, and advocacy
The successful candidate will have or be:
- Strong strategic planning skills and a capacity to develop and implement clear goals, systems and priorities
- An entrepreneurial spirit with a high level of initiative, attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- A positive outlook with a high degree of emotional intelligence
- Deep understanding of development principles and regulations pertaining to charitable contributions
- Proficiency in using fundraising database programs and comfortable with Google Drive/Docs, MS Office, and web-based videoconferencing. Salesforce experience preferred
- Strong financial skills, including the ability to develop budgets and management reports that present a clear financial picture of fundraising activities
- Demonstrated success in fundraising best practices and achieving monetary goals
- Proven track record of cultivating and soliciting major gifts from individuals, and from corporate and foundation donors
- Highly effective written and oral communications skills for diverse audiences and outlets.
- Knowledge of the San Francisco/Bay Area philanthropic community, preferred
- Demonstrated skill in respectful and sensitive communication with diverse cultures, language groups, genders, sexual orientations, lifestyles, and backgrounds
- Strong analytical ability, problem solving skills and attention to detail; ability to prioritize and work well under the pressure of deadlines
- Unquestioned integrity, professional demeanor and authenticity in building relations with and inspiring best effort from staff, donors, volunteers and partners.
- Willingness to travel, mostly within San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin counties. Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed.
