Operations and Development Assistant

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Operations and Development Assistant is a key part of the PRRAC team and is responsible for overseeing the basic day-to-day operational/administrative functions of the organization; supporting the Executive Director and staff to powerfully advance PRRAC’s vision; and providing strong leadership and project management related to development.

This is a full-time, salaried position based in Washington, DC. Salary range is mid- to high fifties, depending on experience, with standard benefits.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

PRRAC is currently seeking an Operations and Development Assistant. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and detail-oriented, proactive, demonstrate excellent interpersonal and project management skills, and be a strong writer. The Assistant will participate in and help facilitate regular staff and team meetings, support PRRAC’s technical assistance and policy advocacy work, and help manage our development/fundraising. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively, listen carefully, and work collaboratively.

The Operations and Development Assistant will:

  • Handle general clerical duties, including processing invoices, tracking expenses, generating reports, ordering supplies, bank deposits, filing, etc.
  • Maintain office calendar and schedule regular staff and team meetings, etc.
  • Help manage internal communications and foster strong, inclusive organizational culture.
  • Assist with outreach and communications with national and local civil rights partners.
  • Support event planning and scheduling (e.g. convenings, board meetings, and webinars).
  • Assist with proofreading, copyediting, and other editorial duties.
  • Conduct internet and factual research, as needed.
  • Help manage PRRAC’s development work, including:
  • Conducting research on prospective foundations and individual donors.
  • Helping develop/maintain strong relationships with prospective and existing funders and donors, through outreach, regular communication, and programming.
  • Assisting with writing and submitting grant proposals and reports, tracking deadlines and activities, and project management.
  • Maintaining files and other internal records (communications logs, budgets, progress on commitments to funders, etc.).
  • Processing donations and preparing acknowledgement letters, etc.
  • Coordinating mailings and e-solicitations, in collaboration with appropriate staff.
  • Provide administrative support to the National Coalition on School Diversity (up to 4 hours weekly).
  • Undertake other tasks, as assigned by the Executive Director and organizational leadership.

REQUIREMENTS

The Operations and Development Assistant will have a Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 3 years of related work experience (prior experience in office administration and/or development preferred).

Additional requirements include:

  • Excellent organizational, time management, and scheduling skills.
  • Detail-oriented, with a very strong work ethic.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Workspace, Constant Contact, and Zoom.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills (including proofreading).
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, set boundaries, adapt, and prioritize.
  • Resourceful, creative, and highly proactive, with an appetite for taking initiative, anticipating needs, and putting systems in place to create efficiencies.
  • Grace under pressure.
  • Effective collaborator, facilitator, and relationship-builder.
  • Enjoy supporting and fostering a collegial, small team environment.

The Poverty & Race Research Action Council (PRRAC) is a non-profit civil rights law and policy organization based in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1989 by major national civil rights and poverty law organizations, PRRAC’s primary mission is to help connect advocates with social scientists working on race and poverty issues, and to develop innovative approaches to structural inequality issues. At the present time, PRRAC’s work is focused in the areas of housing and education, with a particular emphasis on the continuing consequences of historical patterns of housing segregation and development. PRRAC also staffs the National Coalition on School Diversity, a network of 50+ organizations, university-based research centers, and state/local coalitions working to expand support for school integration.
