POSITION SUMMARY

The Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo (“JFGT”) is seeking a Director of Philanthropic Services (“DPS”) to be part its Endowment team.  Reporting to the Director of the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation, a division of JFGT, the DPS will provide operational support to the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation in the key areas of board and committee staffing, stewardship of fund distributions, marketing of needs and opportunities, and planning and development of donor events.  The successful candidate will be an innovative leader and a team player, with strong interpersonal skills and a desire to cultivate relationships at all levels.

The DPS is a full-time, non-exempt employee of JFGT.  The DPS in coordination with the Director of the TJCF and the JFGT Executive Director will support the infrastructure of the TJCF in its mission of enhancing and strengthening the Jewish community through current and future planned gifts.

BACKGROUND

JFGT is the central address for Jewish philanthropy, community programing and services for the Jewish community of northwest Ohio and part of southeast Michigan. JFGT includes a successful endowment program thorough the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation, (TJCF), a seven-figure annual campaign, a Jewish Family and Social Services division including a food pantry, a professionally staffed Jewish Community Relations Council, a preschool in its own building, PJ Library program, an active Next Jewish Generation program, Hillel programs at two regional universities, a Jewish Living Center that provides exceptional programs for community members age 60 and better and a Toledo Jewish Community Cemetery Association that operates and maintains two cemeteries.

TJCF has been cultivated within the Toledo Jewish community for over 25 years and is responsible for an investment portfolio of approximately $50 million dollars.  TJCF coordinates contributions and distributions for 58 donor advised funds.  TJCF provides management supervision for four supporting organizations with over $18 million dollars in assets as well as dozens of restricted and designated funds including Lion of Judah Endowments and Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowments. 

The Toledo Jewish community is small but continues to support three synagogues as well as Chabad.  Toledo boasts the University of Toledo, the Toledo Mudhens, the nationally recognized Toledo Zoo and the Toledo Museum of Art.  Toledo is at the cross-roads of America with easy north/south highway access on I-75 and east/west highway access on I-80.  It is within 50 minutes driving to Ann Arbor, 55 minutes to Detroit, 2.5 hours to Cleveland, and 4 hours to Chicago.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cultivate relationships with TJCF donors and respond to donor requests for information and philanthropic resources.
  • Develop facility with the Donor Advised Fund online donor portal and assist donors with the grant recommendation process.
  • Assist with marketing and public relations initiatives and events to educate and engage the community in distribution and endowment opportunities.
  • Develop and provide oversight of administrative procedures and interface with legal and fiscal advisors to ensure compliance with legal, financial, fiduciary and JFGT/TJCF management policies.
  • Staff TJCF Board and committee meetings, the Jewish Senior Services Supporting Organization Board and other supporting organizations, as assigned.
  • Maintain working knowledge of current and relevant estate/gift/charitable planning techniques and their impact on charitable giving.
  • Staff the TJCF Investment Committee and work with investment advisors and lay leadership to develop meeting agendas, draft minutes and complete post meeting responsibilities. Conduct Annual Life Insurance Review of all life insurance portfolio holdings.
  • Process and oversee the grant cycles for the TJCF Long Term Community Needs Fund and Supporting Organizations, including publishing and promoting requests for proposals, application intake, review, decisions, meeting organization, grant distribution and post-grant evaluation.
  • Coordinate planned giving marketing efforts in conjunction with the JFGT Marketing Director. This involves writing of articles for the Toledo Jewish News, Annual Report, development of TJCF presentation materials for donors and professional advisors as well as others and other pertinent communication pieces. Create, plan, implement and staff events and/or special projects in support of fundraising priorities and leadership engagement. Some of these activities may involve collaboration with the JFGT Campaign Director.
  • Supervise preparation and dissemination of quarterly donor reports including donor newsletters.
  • Provide oversight for college scholarship review process in conjunction with Jewish Family and Social Services.
  • Represent the TJCF at community functions and be a visible presence at events in the Jewish and non-Jewish community, as appropriate and requested.
  • Develop metrics and benchmarks to measure success in meeting TJCF philanthropic goals and in delivering donor services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required; law degree or other advanced degree in finance, tax or accounting preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in public foundation operations or management, fundraising and planned gift development.
  • Knowledge of fundraising database systems and the use of technology in prospect identification and research.
  • Effective at forging strong interpersonal alliances at all levels both within and outside the organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Jewish customs, traditions, the Jewish community, and the Federation field.
