Reporting to the Associate Athletic Director for Major Gifts, the Director of Development is responsible for discovering, cultivating, soliciting, and closing major gifts in support of funding priorities for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

The Director of Development will develop and manage a robust portfolio of prospects who are capable of making major charitable gifts of $50,000 and above. The successful candidate will manage the university’s philanthropic relationships with those donors and prospects while working toward maximizing their generosity and promoting life-long giving in support of the University of Maryland and its athletics program. The Director of Development will ensure positive and purposeful interactions leading to major gifts, and will achieve or exceed personally assigned goals for annual visits, solicitations, dollars raised, and other metrics.

The Director of Development is responsible for assisting with the maintenance and improvement of prospect/donor records, generating reports, meeting/event briefings for department and university leadership, and prospect research and identification. The successful candidate will assist in planning and executing development-related events and other special fundraising initiatives. The Director of Development will serve as a direct point of contact for one or more varsity teams, working directly with the head coach and/or director of operations on their fundraising needs. This person may also serve as a staff liaison to a Terrapin Club board committee.

Education (include licenses, certification, etc.):
Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience:
Minimum of 6 years of successful major gift or leadership level annual fundraising experience.
A track record of working collaboratively on philanthropic gifts within a complex institution, preferably in collegiate athletics.
A proven track record of initiating and building relationships with prospects.
A successful track record of soliciting and closing major or leadership-level annual gifts.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Energetic customer service-oriented professional
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the willingness to make “cold calls” in order to cultivate, solicit and close proposals.
• Ability to synthesize complex material, pay great attention to detail, and exemplify effective time management skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills that will enable him/her to work well with diverse groups of constituents and colleagues.
• Ability to manage many projects simultaneously and a demonstrated record of completing assignments.
• Ability to represent the university and its priorities in a compelling and professional manner.
• Ability to travel up to 60% of the time and will be required to frequently work evenings and weekends.
