DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fundraising

  • Oversees all fundraising initiatives and activities to achieve fundraising goals
  • Identifies potential contributors and sponsorship opportunities through examination of past records, individual and corporate contracts, and knowledge of community
  • Coordinates the assignment of responsibilities for personal solicitation with the board of trustees according to their special interests or capabilities
  • Organizes solicitation drives for pledges of ongoing support from individuals, corporations, and foundations
  • Produces successful direct mail and appeal campaigns
  • Organize, conceptualize, and manage events to raise charitable gifts and increase awareness of Center
  • Evaluate and grow a donor’s relationship and attempt to match donors’ interests and capacity to give to solicit a major or planned gift

Special Events

  • Oversees the planning, supervision, and all details of special events and projects
  • Ensures appropriate announcements, invitations, programs, food, decorations, staffing, set up, clean up, etc. for all special events, graduation ceremonies, and similar activities
  • Support and motivate event committee members and volunteers to achieve event goals

Grants

  • Researches corporations, grant agencies, and foundations to identify potential grant funding
  • Writes and submits letters of inquiry, grant proposals and required documents for grant funds from foundations, corporations, and government agencies
  • Coordinates the management of grant implementation with the departments involved in the funded projects including:
  • Meeting grant goals and objectives
  • Overseeing grant budget
  • Writing final grant reports

Donor Stewardship

  • Develops and implements with the board and executive director a donor stewardship and recognition program
  • Cultivates new and existing relationships and routinely communicates with key supporters to inform donors how their contributions benefit the students and Center
  • Develops personal contacts with selected donors as designated by the board and executive director
  • Recognizes donors’ gifts according to stewardship plan and with accurate and prompt gift acknowledgement according to IRS gift recording requirements

Board of Trustees Relations

  • Works with the board to develop strategies to meet fundraising goals
  • Develops and coordinates fundraising training for board members, leadership, and volunteers
  • Prepares and presents a monthly report of past, current, and future development activities and concerns to the board
  • Serves on appropriate committees as appointed by the board

Development Department Administration

  • Prepares development plan with short- and long-range goals to meet Switzer Center's funding objectives, and enlists support from members of the board, executive director, staff, and volunteer organizations
  • Prepares and monitors department budget
  • Establishes development policies, systems, and procedures
  • Hires, leads, evaluates, and manages development staff and volunteers
  • Supervises donor management procedures including donor database and record management (Neon CRM)
  • Designs and prepares development master events calendar and reports as needed by the board, executive director and development department

Public Relations and Marketing

  • Develop and distribute public relations materials to enhance Center’s image and promote fund raising program
  • Keeps website, blogs, and all digital applications current and relevant using Google analytics and related technologies
  • Supervises and integrates all social media and email efforts; e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Yelp, digital newsletters etc.
  • Creates a consistent messaging design and brand identity in use of graphics and logo throughout all Center’s communications
  • Facilitates obtaining and maintaining photos and videos for publicity of the Center and special events for all channels of communication
  • Speaks on behalf of Switzer Learning Center to community groups explaining Center’s activities, accomplishments, needs, and volunteer opportunities
  • Provides ongoing timely and useful information to board, staff, donors, alumni, elected officials, stakeholders, volunteers, and the media to increase public exposure; awareness of the Center and its programs, board, staff and student achievements; and build positive relationships

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Three to five years professional fundraising experience in analyzing, developing and implementing fundraising strategies with an emphasis on personal solicitation and grant writing programs
  • Bachelor’s degree, although an advanced degree in psychology, education, nonprofit management or institutional development is preferred
  • Strong written communication and editing skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate and persuasive grant proposals, marketing materials, and donation solicitation
  • Strong verbal communication and public speaking skills
  • Ability to work creatively and effectively with a wide variety of people and interest groups, including the board, executive director, staff, donors, volunteers, and community members
  • Ability to successfully work as a leader, part or a team, or independently as duties require
  • Excellent project and time management, analytical reasoning, creative design, organization, attention to details, resourcefulness, judgement, and problem solving skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and donor database management skills are required. Desktop publishing/graphic design skills preferred
  • Personal transportation for local travel to support development activities

COMPENSATION:

  • Starting pay is based on experience (starting range $50,000-$70,000)
  • 10 paid holidays annually
  • 5 days paid for Christmas week break

ABOUT US:
Switzer Learning Centeris a nonprofit, nonpublic, special education school serving 3rd-12th grade students with social, emotional and behavioral challenges. Each student works with a highly trained team of credentialed special education teachers, licensed psychologists, licensed speech and language pathologists, certified Crisis Prevention Intervention behavior specialists and other related service providers who are dedicated to help students achieve academic, vocational and personal goals unobtainable in conventional educational settings. In a supportive and therapeutic environment, students with an IEP eligibility of ED, SLD, SLI, AUT, and OHI receive special education instruction, counseling, language & speech, structured reading and math intervention classes, behavioral analysis/interventions and psychological /educational assessments.

OUR HISTORY:
Our successful special education program incorporates the innovative work of our founder, Dr. Janet Switzer, who was a pioneer in the field of educational therapy. Since 1966 Switzer Learning Center has been operating an outpatient diagnostic and treatment clinic, a K-12 nonpublic school and a nonpublic agency serving children with mild to severe learning, emotional and behavioral challenges and their families. We now have more than 5,000 successful alumni.

OUR PROGRAMS:
The Heritage Program helps special education students from 5th-12th grade with social, emotional and behavioral challenges earn high school diplomas.

The Spectrum Program teaches students with moderate/severe autism independent living skills.

The SAIL Transition Program assists  18-22 years olds with moderate/severe autism transition to adulthood
