Executive Director - State University of New York Impact Foundation

The Executive Director is responsible for leading the effort to cultivate and solicit major, principal, planned, corporate and foundation gifts, as well as prospect research, at the State University of New York System- level. As a key leader, the individual is charged with building an extensive constituent network, engaged, and committed to advancing the mission of the State University of New York.

The Executive Director of the Impact Foundation will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Strategic and operational management of the Impact Foundation.
  • Responsible for strategic planning, budget development, and policy development. 
  • Use of data analytics to drive decision making for the team and to inform senior leadership as well as other stakeholders. 
  • Implement a continuous improvement philosophy that includes benchmarking programs, peer-based performance metrics, and outcomes that support high performance standards.
  • In coordination with the Impact Foundation's Board of Directors, make recommendations for planning, policy and guidelines for SUNY System fundraising and philanthropy. 
  • Oversee annual and long-range program planning and goal setting for the Impact Foundation. Set forth fundraising strategies that complement individual campus fundraising efforts.
  • Personally identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects for major gifts and/or partnerships that align with SUNY's standards through visits and other forms of direct contact for development.
  • Represent SUNY to various external institutional constituents (i.e., corporations, foundations, funding agencies, government agencies, etc.) to develop relationships and reinforce the importance public higher education how SUNY is vital institution that makes significant.
  • Engage with SUNY Leadership, faculty and staff across SUNY campuses to articulate strategy for development of partnerships and collaborations in order to enhance SUNY's   mission.
  • Engage SUNY Leadership and key stakeholders to identify strategic funding needs, as well as, policies and procedures for the distribution of funds. 
  • Interact with public and private sector leaders to represent SUNY and negotiate agreements and engagements aligned with SUNY's mission and vision.
  • Manage drafting, review, and editing of philanthropic agreements and other documents, and coordinate the review process for legal documents while working closely with senior leadership, SUNY General Counsel, and external counsel as needed.
  • Negotiate the terms and conditions for philanthropic donations and agreements with external entities.
  • Lead and participate in meetings with potential donors and collaborators.
  • Work with financial advisors and provide SUNY Leadership with investment strategies to develop an optimum portfolio.  
  • Oversee the development and implementation of external and internal communications plans regarding Impact Foundation activities. 
  • Coordinate and facilitate regular communication among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Manage the annual Impact Foundation's operating budget.
  • Supervise development reporting and administrative record keeping.
  • Manage and direct the Impact Foundation prospect management system.
  • Evaluate and balance fundraising priorities to reflect the interests of current and newly identified donors.

Job Requirements:
The ideal candidate will be a results-oriented fundraising professional with an established track record of diverse and progressively more sophisticated advancement experience; capital campaign planning, management, and implementation experience; financial acumen; and an executive level of supervisory and managerial experience, preferably in a higher education setting. 

The ideal candidate must possess excellent interpersonal and presentation skills needed to represent SUNY's interests to a wide spectrum of constituent groups, consortia, and collaborative partners.  The successful candidate will be equally adept with prospect research; gift processing software; online giving strategies; traditional and new media and other emerging technologies that will optimize SUNY’s outreach to potential supporters.  Fundamentally, an ability to connect with potential supporters, matching their commitment to serve and invest, in the mission and vision of SUNY.

Bachelor's degree is required, advanced degree preferred.  Other requirements include fundraising experience with a successful track record in major and principal gifts and project management; campaign experience is a plus.  Familiarity with higher education is preferred. Excellent oral and written communications skills, facilitation, and good organizational skills are essential. Work requires business development, analytical, financial and program management skills normally acquired through at least 7 years progressive experience.

Preference given to those candidates with experience in higher education philanthropy.  This position requires travel and is based out of Albany, NY.

Architect: Someone who has significant experience with major capital campaigns in higher education and is able to bring new and best practices to SUNY as the System engages in unprecedented efforts and gains in fundraising and partnerships.

Team Player: The ideal candidate will collaborate well with leaders at the System and the Campuses, driving' collaboration, in building external support that will enable SUNY to thrive in years to come.

Strategist: Someone with a significant track record of success and ability to share a compelling case for SUNY, develop relationships with internal and external groups, and the ability to convey to diverse audiences why SUNY is uniquely qualified for significant investment and partnerships.

Communicator: The Executive Director must be adept at formulating a narrative that conveys SUNY success stories enabling social mobility, and effectively portrays SUNY as an intellectually vibrant epicenter for teaching, learning, research, and leadership and workforce training in diverse disciplines.

Catalyst: Someone who has the capacity, desire, and commitment to engage and travel   extensively on behalf of SUNY to cultivate a variety of stakeholders and prospective donors.

Change Agent: The Executive Director must have the ability to think well outside of the box and can identify and engage supporters with an inclination towards innovation and sustainability.

Steward: Someone who is experienced and committed to maintaining responsible stewardship protocols such as timely gift acknowledgments, post-award report submission, and excellent donor records management. The candidate must have familiarity with record-keeping software programs, online giving programs, and other technologies.
