SUMMARY: 

The Director of Foundation Relations will serve as a key member of Frost Science’s growing Advancement team and will lead the identification, securing, and management of grant funding. As an exceptional relationship builder, storyteller and writer, the Director of Foundation Relations will secure funding that both supports Frost Science’s existing operations and programs and enables expansion in pursuit of our mission to inspire understanding of and appreciation for science among people of all ages. A general appreciation for the important role museums and culture play in a vibrant community is a must, as is a positive, collaborative, and good-humored approach. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of foundations to develop meaningful relationships that strengthen museum operations, exhibitions, and programs 
  • Craft and execute plan to meet or exceed Frost Science’s annual foundation fundraising goals by securing funding from private, family, and corporate foundations, and government grant programs
  • Collaborate with Frost Science’s Education, Animal Husbandry, Conservation and Exhibition teams to pursue programmatic grant opportunities and ensure fulfillment of grant terms
  • Partner with Director of Advancement to create a strategy to strengthen relationships with existing foundation funders 
  • Oversee grant application and ensure compliance with grant agreement and requisite reporting 
  • Create and maintain calendar of foundation deadlines (i.e., due dates for grant applications, reports, letters of inquiry, etc.) 
  • Develop a library of broadly focused museum metrics applicable for foundation opportunities, update on a quarterly basis 
  • Participate in all advancement efforts, including individual and corporate fundraising and department administration, as an integral member of a small but mighty team 
  • Oversee and implement stewardship reporting in Tessitura, working closely with Advancement Administrator to document progress
  • Schedule, coordinate, and lead site visits with foundation prospects and partners
  • Host/attend meetings and events and develop/deliver presentations with foundation prospects and funders
  • Partner with Marketing department to create visually compelling reports and materials

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

 

  • Minimum of 6 – 7 years of progressively responsible fundraising experience showcasing the ability to build and maintain excellent relationships and to secure grant funding
  • Undergraduate degree required
  • Genuine interest in and strong commitment to Frost Science’s vision and mission
  • Track record of successful grantwriting, leading to 6- and 7-figure grants, with samples available upon request
  • Evidence of strong ability to digest and then present complex information clearly and concisely in a wide variety of formats a variety of funder audiences
  • Prior experience in a cultural facility, science and/or higher education institution a plus

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • It is critical that the candidate absorb the mission, language, and brand of the organization to successfully represent its identity across a multitude of platforms
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication
  • Exceptional attention to details and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute a plan to meet and exceed foundation fundraising goals 
  • Ability to manage quick-turn around and long-term projects, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and think strategically and creatively
  • Must be able to work in a team as well as be able to work independently and be self-motivated
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to make presentations to senior level groups as well as to build one-on-one relationships with members of diverse constituencies at all levels of authority 
  • Excellence in English language (oral and written) required, Spanish fluency a plus
    • Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills and knowledge of database applications, preferably Tessitura.
    • Team player with willingness to adapt to new and evolving organizational and funding priorities and to work occasional evenings and early mornings as events and project deadlines dictate

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those as employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work time will primarily be in an open office setting. Weekend and evening work in alignment with programs is sometimes required.  

 

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Level 2 background clearance as defined by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
