Senior Director of Philanthropy Administration


The Senior Director of Philanthropy Administration reports directly to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and will focus on providing executive level leadership and management of the comprehensive activities of systems, reporting, gift processing, data management, data analytics, human resources, budgeting, planning, compliance and other special projects as needed for the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) Philanthropy Department. Serve as an active participant of the Philanthropy Department leadership team.

  • Lead and coordinate all activities in the areas of database administration, gift processing, constituent records, reporting and documentation, and related technology support, ensuring all systems and business practices effectively support the Philanthropy division and its internal and external constituents
  • Oversee Philanthropy staff, including but not limited to, interviewing, hiring, training, performance management and assignment of work
  • Lead the Philanthropy Department’s annual budget and business plan development
  • Develop and implement plans to improve the effectiveness of current systems. This includes software solutions as well as business practices
  • Ensure adherence to IRS code and regulations, acknowledgement data requirements and develop innovative solutions to impediments that hinder the effectiveness of the fundraising operation
  • Produce actionable analytics for developing strategies and tactics
  • Analyze current and emerging trends in Philanthropy Services and provide strategic approaches to improve SDZWA’s current and future Philanthropy program activities
  • Oversee the provision of office space and technologies for Philanthropy staff
  • Communicate and implement SDZWA compliance initiatives as needed
  • Produce monthly reports and dashboards on a timely basis

  • Minimum five (5) years of demonstrated success in administration/coordination of a comprehensive Development program
  • Experience working in a complex fundraising environment such as an academic or health sciences institution with multiple units and programs
  • Bachelor's degree in related field required
  • Advanced degree in related field required
  • Comprehensive understanding of all data administration functions within a complex Development operation including gift processing and database administration
  • Comfort and extensive experience with integrating information from diverse sources
  • Complete proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook; familiarity with Blackbaud systems such as Raiser’s Edge and NXT preferred
  • Excellent proofreading and editing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to create and lead a thriving team and to work collaboratively with Philanthropy and SDZWA staff
  • Ability to prioritize projects and task
  • Strong analytical, research and organizational skills
  • Advanced capability to pay close attention to detail
  • History of the commitment to maintaining information security and confidentiality
  • Location: San Diego Zoo
  • Duration: Year round
  • Exempt position: Salary commensurate with experience (range $100,000 - $120,000)
