Overview

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's leading conservation organizations, seeks a Senior Director, Climate Communications. The Senior Director will lead the development and execution of short- and long-term external communications strategies that advance the organization's climate objectives, support resource mobilization, and link to the broader communications and outreach strategy of the organization. The incumbent serves as the point of contact on internal and external communications related to the Climate Goal team and coordinates climate-related communications with others goal teams. The Senior Director is a key partner in strategy development and implementation.



Responsibilities

The Senior Director, Climate Communications leads strategic communications for the Climate Team, including message development, internal communication, marketing, social media and fundraising priorities. Working with senior leadership, the Senior Director helps cultivate a unique WWF brand and voice for climate change mitigation and adaptation work. S/he/they develops and leads on communications strategies/plans that help deliver climate outcomes and raises brand awareness among key stakeholders. Ensures consistency in climate change messaging across the organization. Identifies content ideas and opportunities to reach multiple and diverse audiences (e.g., general, policy, corporate, donors, etc.)

    Partners with Senior Vice President, Climate; Deputy Goal Lead, Climate; and subject matter experts to develop and implement climate communications plan which amplifies climate programs and strategies, with donors as a key audience. Coordinate's climate-related messaging with communicators from Forests, Food, Freshwater, Oceans, Policy, Science, Development and Private Sector Engagement teams to ensure a unified organizational approach to climate communications. Develops talking points for organizational leaders that reflect WWF's climate change positions, values, and goals. Identifies key events to maximize visibility and strengthen relationships with donors, corporate partners, government institutions, and other stakeholders. Collaborates with Media team by providing strategic knowledge of industry outlets to support media outreach and other external communications. Lead compelling storytelling efforts and programmatic communications channels (e.g., podcast, partnership websites, social media channels). Identify potential alliances, partnerships, and coalitions to increase breadth of audiences. Track, share, and make recommendations regarding climate activities and priorities across WWF-US and Network communications teams. With support from climate team staff, create, edit, and review content for communications with donors, corporate and civil society partners, policy-makers, WWF Board and Council, and other stakeholders. Any other tasks/projects as assigned.


Qualifications

    A bachelor's degree or equivalent in communications, marketing, environmental issues, climate change, public policy or business required. Post-graduate degree in marketing or communications preferred. Ten to Twelve years of professional communications experience. Familiarity with the field of climate change required. Experience with mission-oriented strategic communications directed at diverse audiences and geographies a plus. Proven ability to translate scientific or technical information to a lay audience preferred. Demonstrated success in conceptualizing, developing, implementing, and managing communications strategies that support an entity's strategic goals across a wide range of diverse stakeholders and audiences. Experience working in an international environment. Understands cultural differences and can communicate and operate with nuance and diplomacy on complicated and controversial issues. Creative and innovative thinker who has experience utilizing diverse channels, outlets, and opportunities to craft and deliver messages to different audiences. Ability to position climate issues in such a way as to influence and leverage change well beyond WWF. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Anticipates communications conflicts, reputation, and brand risks, and works to mitigate them. Strong commitment to WWF's mission, goals, and values.
